Smell of wet socks: Are my cakes exhausted?
    #14042304 - 02/28/11 01:58 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I'm on my third PF-Tek flush now, the first two were quite successful, especially the second one after I dunked and rolled my BRF cakes(got one shroom the lenght of my upper arm).
I dunked the cakes in tab water again for a little more than 20 hours last saturday and now they're sitting in the incubation chamber emitting this particular smell...a little bit like wet socks or like vintage clothes. Not really bad nor sour nor weird (I don't think its Bacillus), just a little old but still somewhat "mushroomy", and I was wondering if anyone knows what I'm talking about. I can't see any signs of contamination, they just have some black spots from spores and a few greenish/blue bruises where shrooms used to be.
I figured, after almost a month hanging in the incubation chamber, it's probably normal that they don't smell pure, fresh and mushroomy anymore, right? Or should I be worried?

And also: I was wondering how you can tell your cake is through? Just by the fact that shroom growth has stopped? How long should one keep trying to reanimate them by dunking?

I appreciate your help guys!

Dust? Really? Mhm...that didn't occure to me. I thought they were pretty safe inside the box. But if you say so.

And I don't know how much you can expect, I hear/read anything from 3 to 5 flushes would be normal. I was just wondering how you can tell the cake is done...

Ah, ok. Now I get it.
I'm awaiting 3rd flush now. Let's see if the cakes can overcome the vintage smell...

you dont "reanimate" by dunking, you "rehydrate" them. like you dont get
"reanimated" when you drink something after 10 hours of fine sleep.

okay i suppose a strong coffee after a heavy night now might do just that
but you know what i meatn to say.

Well, I'm glad I didn't throw away my cakes after all. The smelly old socks just gave birth to wonderful and incredibly large new fruits! I guess they took just a little longer than after the first dunk.

One should never give them up, even if they smell like dirty underware...That's pretty much my conclusion!

Peace out!

A.

Ok, I see...fruits grow normally though. What do you suggest I should do? Just kill the whole thing?

Ok, so you seem to be sure there's contamination...Just from the sock smell you can tell?

Are we talking serious health issue? If I dry those shroomies and eat them, will I get green skin, stomache poisened or sumthing?

no probly not.

i guess it would depend on the kind of bacteria, all i know is that that smell = bacteria.

The "smelly" flush turned out nicely. Got lots of fruits - not a big and as thick as the first two flushes, but big enough. My cakes looked pretty damaged though, they had black spots from the spores and some parts were also green/blueish, where fruits from the second flush used to be. I did not consider a fourth try. The cakes did have a particular but faint smell towards the end, a little like burned plastic, but I've dried the shrooms now and they look perfectly fine to me. So if you ask me, I'd say you give it a try and decide afterwards. If you really have contams, it will show (and smell) soon enough...

What flush are you on?

Wet sock smell is indicative of the presence of bacteria.

Hey, glad to hear everything worked out fine. Sometimes one just has to sit through things, I guess. And I'm also guessing that my smell came from the perlite too, I don't think you are hallucinating at all. I mean, after 3 weeks or so moisting, exposing the box to air, etc., it's probably normal things start to smell less fresh, right?

Well anyway, wish you all the best with your current project, bro!
