Shiitake for Virgins - Grow Log / Invitation
    #14042287 - 02/28/11 03:56 PM (10 years, 7 months ago)

Time to learn shiitake, I reckon.
EvilMushroom666 hooked me up with a wedge, very generous.
I'm planning to make dowel spawn for friends and dowels or sawdust blocks for myself.
This thread will be a place to discuss it as the grow goes along.
Plan at this stage is agar->grain->grain LC->grain->dowels.

This is Stage Zero.
Unpack wedge, load glovebox, wait fifteen minutes, inoculate jars.

Wooden dowels. Colonize with fungus, then plug into holes drilled in logs.

Ahh.I read about plugs and logs. Cool stuff. My cultures were mailed today. Expecting by friday.
I hear sawdust works well for these. Not sure where to get sawdust though. I can get shavings that are used in horse stalls at the local ag store.

I'm book marking this thread.

Thanks

This thread was moved from Mushroom Cultivation.

Reason:
We only discuss actives in the Mushroom Cultivation forum so I'm moving this to Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms forum.

Once it gets going, you'll be amazed at how fast it grows.  Shiitake will colonize a sawdust substrate in half the time cubensis needs to colonize the same amount of horse manure.

Then, you get to wait two months until it's ready to fruit.

I give credit to shiitakes from preventing any cold/flu this year for me!

Unfortunately my greenhouse collapsed in a snowstorm :frown:

Goodluck, I'm sure it will turn out marvelously.

Was the wedge 75?

Nice idea Doc!

I have gotten fruits from my work with sawdust.  I have yet to find
a good source for cheap logs here in So Cal.

Hey Teknix, check the first photo, it is "Night Velvet"

Take care,

Long disproved.  Peroxide isn't a substitute for sterilization, even for the lazy.

Y'all buy your dowels locally, or through the mail?
Big-name hardware stores had tiny expensive bags, ok for a couple uses but not viable long term.
I'm going to check a local woodworking place today... where else?

That's really cheap. I didn't want to order them, but it's good to know it's a viable option. Thanks!

I saw a gadget at the dollar store- makes "ice tubes" for slipping into water bottles.
Briefly wondered whether it was PP5 and whether you could make BRF plugs... I may go back and check it out.

Quick update:
Of those four jars, one showed bacteria, one did nothing, and two had mycelium.
I transferred to three petri dishes which all seem to be doing fine.
Disregard the water drops, it's not as bad as it looks.

That is just it....there are not that many trees around where I live.

What edibles will grow on eucalyptus?  Few, I expect.

I will work with supplemented sawdust block for now.

From that post:

"Stamets comment held up the serious investigation of Eucalyptus for many years
apparently it was an anecdotal report via David arora later retracted and signed off as an isolated incident

meanwhile they grow shiitake on Eucalyptus commercially in brazil - maybe GGMM wasnt translated to portuguese?

This should be a lesson to everyone, especially those whove read all the books - that none of it is gospel.

Eucalyptus is great

Its worked well for
Shiitake, Azures, Subaeruginosa, P ostreatus, P pulmonarius, Reishi, Agrocybe, Wood ear, P djamor, Golden oyster, Enoki.

Not well for

Lions mane"

Wow.  I happily stand corrected.  I thought that the oils in Eucalyptus
would at least slow growth.

Thanks!

JD

Looking forward to following in your footsteps (again!)  Doc_T.  I don't have a lot of understanding of the edibles process, but I'm really interested in getting into edible and medicinal grows.

Please keep us informed of the details!

This stuff is amazing- ready to transfer to grain already.

You know the deal: load glovebox, wait fifteen minutes, perform sterile transfers.
I should have pics of growth on grain in a few days.

Very cool Doc, I'd like to get into some edibles sometime soon as well. And I love the random bud pics, lol.

Loving the pics Doc.  What variety of bud is that?  Looks like nice nug.  Gotta get my flowhood built.  That GB seems to be doing alright in your hands though.

AK-47, the guy says. I dunno. It's good.
Today I have three grades of herb to choose from plus cookies, it's a great feeling.

Glovebox works great, but only up to a certain point.
It's small and cramped and limiting in some ways.
But for the hobby grower, it's a perfectly viable option.

Edit- the fourth jar is showing some mycelium finally.
It would be possible to transfer away from the contams, but I just tossed it since the others went so well.

That's a 50% failure rate for those four initial jars, but that's not typical for me, more like 5% or less.
And looked at another way, it's a 100% success rate. I've got clean viable cultures.

You'll love Shiitake! I've had mine in spawn bags for the last four months. I don't have room to fruit them. They are great in soups!

Grain masters in progress.

Ok to shake them? Or not? They're getting to that stage.

I have been waiting for 30-40% colonization before shaking with the
shiitake 75 strain. I went G2G 1L of spawn out to 10L, that took
place on march 10th. I then shook at 30-40% on Tuesday the 15th and
they have just recovered today on the 18th. I figure next week I
should be ready to start sterilizing substrate blocks.

Do you find yourself able to transfer away from the bacterial contamination in the one agar plate and grow some clean tissue from it ?

Quick update, no pics;
Dowels were soaked overnight, strained, then PCed for 90+ mins.
I used PP5 plastic tubs, two dozen dowels per container.
Grain to dowel transfer took place today, so dowels should be done and ready to mail in two weeks or so.

Dowels are colonizing nicely.
first tub is Panellus stipticus, second is yellow oyster. Oysters looked a bit reluctant at first then got into growing.
Shiitake tore right into the dowels as expected.

Nice work. I just today put some left over Reishi grain spawn into plastic containers just like yours with Tasmanian Oak dowel that had been soaking overnight. Is normal colonization time around 2 - 3 weeks?
