There are probably a few thousands species that fit that description

We need a much more detailed description than that if you want an accurate ID. Please read the sticky thread at the top of the forum.

Having said that, you might try looking up Psathyrella candolleana and see how close it is to what you found.

Happy mushrooming!

Thats funny, I was going to post last night that it's probably a species of Psathyrella. Due to the fact that we live in the similar location, I would say either gracilis group. Possibly another species.

I say this because I have found many Psathyrella's around the past few weeks myself. They are growing from woodchips, disturbed areas, and grass. They have some different characterisitics but I believe they are the same mushroom.

The only reason I would not say its candolleana would be because I have not found this mushroom in our area since the beginning of fall. However, they could be popping up again in the springtime!

As ToxicMan said, we will not be able to make a positive ID without more information.... However, if you're just looking for edibles/hallucinogenic mushrooms I could tell you that they the mushroom you found is neither.

a. it was growing in the grass, no trees nearby

d. the stem was white/light yellow, smooth, hallow and thin
e. cap was white at the edges and light bown towards the center, smooth and a little pointy
f. spore print was grey
g. didn't bruise
h. smelled woody

Thanks, that's a much better description.

If you could, please describe what you mean by grey for the gills and spore print. Is it a pale grey or a dark grey? Also, is the stem (at the top, where it joins the cap) thicker or thinner than 6 millimeters? Looking at the surface of the stem, is it smooth, fibrous (maybe sort of hairy), scaly, something else?

Based on what you've given us so far I'm still inclined to guess one of the common lawn Psathyrellas. Another possibility could be Mycena, if grey means a very pale grey.

Keep us posted. We'll be looking forward to your next update.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks again for the update.

The bad news is that there are a lot of mushrooms that look like what you've described so far. A photograph would help eliminate some of them, but since you didn't post one to start with I'll guess you can't easily manage that.

Here are links to photos of some species which resemble yours in description. Remember that most mushrooms can vary considerably in appearance, so just because one of the photos looks just like your specimens doesn't mean it's actually the same species. The description that accompanies the photos should be relied on more.

Psathyrella candolleana - this is one of the best matches to your description.
Psathyrella gracilis - this one normally doesn't have a pale colored stem.
Panaeolus foenisecii - this one doesn't normally have a whitish cap margin.
Psilocybe castanella - this is not an active species; this one is also one of the best matches for your description.

I'm sure that some of the others out here could come up with a list of other species which they could be. This is just a few of the more common and obvious candidates.

If you'd still like to try for a more precise ID let us know. Your mushroom falls into the general group of mushrooms referred to as LBMs (Little Brown Mushrooms). David Arora points out that a few hours work by somebody who has an idea what they're doing will be able to identify about 1 in 50 of these guys.

Happy mushrooming!
