I think it really depends on custom and personal preference... there are many different ayahuasca traditions and recipes.

I'm sure this varies substantially by region and the nature of the shaman or shamaness ingesting ayahuasca. Twice a week is a lot of ayahuasca, but for a shamanic leader this is certainly feasible.

I live in Iquitos, Peru, and know quite a lot of shamans here, so I can answer this question with some certainty.
The answer is - it depends!
During their training and earlier years as a shaman they are likely to drink far more often than when they're in old age. However, even some of the older shaman drink pretty frequently.
A lot of the shamans here (or 'curanderos' to give them their proper title) do only drink about twice a week, or at least they only do public ceremonies about twice a week. The most common days for ceremonies here in Iquitos are Tuesdays and Fridays.
However, there are shamans who drink far more than that. I've heard from many different people that they know shamans who drink 5, 6 or even 7 days a week.
I know one person who told me he knew a shaman in his 90's who said he had drank ayahuasca something like 6 or 7 times a week for his entire life. That is not normal though.
I'd say 2 or 3 times a week is about average. But it can be a lot more.

Do you know how to answer PM's? I have a few questions about shamanism in peru.
