Mold on slowly colonizing cake?
    #14040638 - 02/28/11 07:55 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

These cakes have been colonizing for over two months, they had poor circulation until recently when I took them out of the garbage bag they were in. One of them is very near finished, and this one seems to have something growing right out of the center of the uncolonized portion of the cake.

There is the possibility that this part of the cake touched the bottom of the jar and picked up some mycelium that was attached to the glass (I have flipped it upside down several times to encourage fresh air exchange). So I don't really know what to think. Will this cake smell different than a normal cake if it is contaminated? Can I safely put it into fruiting conditions or will that be a risk of contaminating other nearby cakes?

Thanks!

That is obviously NOT fine bro. Get rid of it ASAP and start again better luck next time. If you try to cut it off you will send spores everywere!!!!!! And you risk Future grows!!!!!    Throw the whole jar out or if you need the jar boil it for 2 hours then dump out side somewhere.

There's your problem...You didn't have enough GE, because you were keeping them in a trash bag... https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/14043924/fpart/1
There's a link to that type of discussion, obviously it's for bulk spawn but it applies to mycology in general.

I'd toss those beasts...or boil for 2 hours then dump outside...over 2 months is way too long for colonization of a BRF cake...

you might get away with cutting out the infected part of the jar, but conventional wisdom proven by many is to toss the contents wash the jar and start over.

Well I cut off the top portion of the cake, leaving no uncolonized substrate behind and its now dunking in water and H2O2 for about 24 hours. I doubt I'll get a great flush but its worth a shot to me. Thanks for the help. Oh and the other jar is very near done now, and there are no signs of contam, but who the hell knows.
