I use as low as 1:10 with pasteurized horse manure, and it takes about two weeks to colonize a 7 pound substrate.  As said, coir is great for people in cities, since it's in every pet store.  The nearest coir to me is now 300 miles away, but we have horses and cows right on the property.  Use what you have.
