Liquid Culture help
    #14040430 - 02/28/11 05:44 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hi, first time posting, long time lurker.

I have recently started a LC using the honey route..

im currently on day 7, There is mycelium growing from the spores i introduced, but, there is a large deal of sediment in the jar too and the jar is very cloudy with this sediment... Will this sediment be an issue?

Should i wait one or two more days and wait to see if this clears up as to eliminate bacteria as a possible contaminant?

If this sediment is a bacteria, should i stop stirring the jar in order to let the mycelium group together in order to fight the bacteria as a single strong unit rather than 100 little units?

Figured dark background with light shinning through the jar would be best, as to make the main center piece, the inner's of the jar.

Will add better lightend pics.

Your camera can't focus on that. Too close, too dark.
Step back, and provide front light as well as backlighting.

My opinion: sediment should settle about as fast as the myc, a couple hours.
If a jar doesn't clarify if left overnight, it's likely got bacteria.

Best possible... Overhead lighting from ceiling light + under lighting provided by lamp.

Better, but sunlight is what you want.

Looking at those pics, I'm not encouraged. But day 7 is early, wait a week and see what happens.

Thanks, will do with the waiting..

Anyone have other opinions?

Im sure everyone knows, but, just pointing it out.. The black spot(s) are spore(s), not the sediment.. lol

"If a jar doesn't clarify if left overnight, it's likely got bacteria."

Doc is right.  Clear might be clean or dirty, but I have yet to have
an LC stay cloudy and not clear up that was not also infected.

(though I might give it another day or two)

Good luck,

JD

your right on the money, have been stirring everyday as to hydrate the spores. Will stop stirring until alot of the cloudyness has vanished.

The solution is becoming clearer hour by hour as the mycelium grows. Looks like cotton, very fine cotton, pulled apart... At the base of the jar, there is a white cloud that becomes visible after a little swirl.

I was under the impression that i was over stirring but, i never trust my own judgement on things like this, especially when their is much more "experienced" people willing to give me their 2cents worth which i greatly appreciate  .

Does anyone know of a day by day pictorial of LC growth? It would help noobies like me greatly. I have seen the contam pictorials, but, they are very hard to see and distinguish.

Thanks for the info guys!! i look forward to being a contributor of this site.

Update ~ Looking good??

UnStirred ~

Stirred ~

As you can see in the 3rd pic, there is still a large amount of spore in the solution...

You have arrived.

The first picture says it all.  Those gooey blobs...those are what you want.

...and the fact that the medium has cleared out otherwise is another good sign.

The fact is though that there is no telling for certain.  Make sure
to shoot a test jar before you go big.

Good luck,

JD

that lc looks fine but you gotta shoot a test jar first to make sure it's good to go.
