Fruiting chamber. help.
    #14040197 - 02/28/11 02:49 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I am going to make a fruiting chamber.
Please inform me on all the essential things needed to grow them.
Materils i have that I think i will need:
Fish air pump, with 2 stones and pleanty of tubing/parts.
Tupperware container.
Smaller container that will fit inside of big container.
thermometer

What else do i need?
Whould gypsum powder work for the substance that the  cake sits on?

And How do fruiting chambers work, humidity, freash air? That all?

Any help would be goood.

Simplest and most cost effective FC. Best for beginners.

Could try this. This method's dirt-cheap and works quite well :smile: I'm assuming you're working with PF cakes:

You need:
* 3-liter (preferably) or 2-liter clear soda bottle
* Small storage bin, no top necessary (like $4 at any store, or improvise)
* Perlite
* Small, sharp knife
* Scotch tape
* Aluminum foil
* Jar top, or other flat sturdy surface

* You will also need a mister. Fanning can be done with your hands, but a mister/fan combo is the way to go and they are a relatively cheap, good investment.

take a >clear< 3-liter (2-liter will work but is kinda small for this purpose) soda bottle, and rinse it out really nicely. Cut the top of the bottle with a box knife or similar, right above where the label is, so that you have two pieces that fit into each other rather snug. If they don't fit properly, use tape to hold the two pieces together, to make a 'lid'.

Next, poke a few small holes all the way around the bottle, just a little above where the label begins at the bottom. Do the same about halfway up the bottle - this is to combat CO2 buildup.

Now, rinse your perlite really well (can even heat-sterilize first if you'd like), drain equally well, and fill up to about where the label begins at the bottom. Moisten the perlite, and put a jar top in the center of the bottle on top of the perlite - shiny side face-down (otherwise light will reflect from the bottom, more on this in a minute.)

Place your cake on top of the lid, and get a small plastic storage bin to put your whole setup in. Poke one more 'very' small hole slightly below the perlite level, to allow large excesses of water to drain into the storage bin. This prevents the FC from flooding.

Use a piece of aluminum foil to cover the bottom of the container where the label isn't blocking. This helps prevent mushrooms from growing downwards by blocking the light from entering in any direction except the top.

Mist and fan every 2-6 hours, make sure to fan for at least 30 seconds. Keep the light on for 8 hours, and off for 16, per day. No need to be exact, just aim for that. Try to keep the temperature around 72-75F for cubes..not too hot, not too cold. For other species of mushroom, some things here may need to be altered but the concept should still remain the same. Remember, you want the FC basically as misty as you can get it without flooding it, which will make the cake sink, and you need to air it out often to better prevent CO2 buildup/possible contamination.

Also, make sure the perlite is replaced periodically..it can get pretty nasty at times if it's been sitting in stagnant water for awhile.

There you go! Cheap, easily hide-able FC :smile: You can even cut little 'window' holes out of the label, so that you can see the cake through it, but if the bottle is turned it looks just like an empty soda bottle B)

wow. Thank you, i will try this as my first grow will only be with one cake.

If i colonize one whole cake, can i heat a knife up and cut some mycelium off and place it in another jar to colonize?

Dunno, haven't tried that personally..but idk if you'd want the knife to be hot when you do that, because it might cause the cake to blue heavily where you cut. Also contamination may be an issue with somethin like that - a better way might be to cut your section, grow it out on agar in a petri dish, isolate a clean piece and use that to inoculate new jars - unless anybody has better ideas.

Possibly, not very well. Better to fruit your cake and make prints.

Oh yeah, if you need a dunking chamber, do the same thing with a 2-liter bottle (aka cut the top right above where the label is), fill it about halfway with water - too much will spill over. Put your cake inside this, then put the top back on--upside down. Use this top to push the cake under the water so that it is completely submerged. Leave it soaking for the recommended time (around 24h.)

Sure as hell beats trying to find a plate that fits perfectly inside of a large pot to do it!

Eventually I'll write a tek for this w/ pics.
