RR, have a question for you

I saw in one of your previous posts that you have a wood stove. I have a modified wood stove that has pipes running from it blowing warm air to a couple places in my house. Have you ever tried to dry mushrooms using the wood stove somehow? It doesn't blow crazy HOT air. Is there anything wrong with using it? It will dry the shit out of anything I put near it. I also searched the forums for ways that you yourself have dried things but couldn't find much. Anyone else have an opinion? I might just build myself dehydrator that runs at like 100F.

Yeah, my opinion is get a big bowl with a top to it, some chicken wire (or something similar), and some desiccant. Cut the wire (or whatever you use) to fit over the top of the bowl with it being a little bigger so you can have it sort of hang inside the bowl, and have some hang out the outside, so you can hold it in place by putting on the lid..Make 2 of these screen layers..one to hang in the bowl, and one to also hang in the bowl, but lower than the first. Put the shrooms on the upper layer screen, and the desiccant on the lower layer, but on some cheese cloth or just some paper towels or something sitting on the lower layer. The water will be sucked from the shrooms and into the bottom of the bowl, and no loss in potency due to heat.
There may be modifications to this technique, but this is how I do it. Also, depending on how many shrooms you're drying, you may need to do different batches or get x amount of times your supplies. But I still prefer cuz I don't like heat on my shrooms.

Or just go spend 30 dollars and get a dehydrator. Not many heat up warm enough to lose potency; and if yours does it's extremely simple to eliminate the heating element.

I have done plenty of searching for drying methods and have found plenty of information. Just didn't find much about the way RR used to do it, I was just curious of his personal methods....A dehydrator is simple enough to make so why spend the money to buy one when I can build one for nothing with a custom temperature and custom airflow.

The area around our wood stove looks like the Beverly Hillbillies house all winter. I built wire rack shelves and stretched wire everywhere for drying mushrooms, making deer and beef jerky, apple jerky, etc. It's the perfect place. RR

I just set them on a box fan sitting over the heat vent, it dries them cracker dry in like 16 hours. Will probably take longer when it gets warm enough to turn off the heat tho.

Im sure the fact that my heat kicks on every 10 minutes and stays on for 20 minutes is probably helping. But I have read just using a box fan raised off the ground with the mush sitting right on the grill with no heat will dry them in 24 hours. Guess I will find out when it warms up.

Off topic, but forced air heat has to be the most energy inefficient method of heating ever dreamed up by mankind. As soon as that bastard wears out, replace it with something with a bit of thermal mass. Air has virtually none, so heating air is the wrong way to go. Instead, heat a solid surface with mass, and let that in turn warm the air. RR

Yeah plus my heating bill was over $330 two months ago and $270 last month, my bills in the summer are like $60 or $70. I wish I had a wood burning stove, it would pay for itself in one winter. I do have a fireplace but all the heat goes straight up that thing, I might try to look for some kind of stove that I could just run right to the chimney of my fireplace. I never even use the fireplace because I think it sucks the heat out more than it warms the house.

I live in a climate that's -20F to -30F all winter and heat my house for the entire season on less than $50 in gas for the chain saw. This is in a climate where we have snow on the ground for 8 months out of the year, and even get frost in July and August. I cut my firewood from an area where a forest fire ten years ago killed all the trees, but left them standing. This means they're already releasing their carbon into the air as CO2, thus there is a zero carbon footprint from burning it for heat.
People in other places will need to do what is appropriate for their area, but using 'conventional' heat transfers money from working people to the super-rich and terrorist organizations who own and manage the so-called 'energy supply'. RR

Yeah wood stoves are great. Being a slave to your woodstove sucks though....but better than paying $4,500 for oil during the winter .....

Not meaning you are a slave....I load mine 3 times a day if its really cold (negative to 5F, twice with a heat wave in the high 20's)....Plus I have to monitor it for the first 45 minutes to make sure everything is OK when I do load it, with airflow etc...So Ide say I monitor the stove for a good 2-3 hours a day,....Humidifier took a shit on me, good old Walmart humidifier LMAO ...Perlite drying out in the SGFC...Just sprayed streamed water on the perlite for 5 minutes before I saw a couple drops leak out of the bottom.

P.S. if you waterlog your perlite, the air wont be able to get through the bottom holes because water will be blocking it. Look at the bottom of your SGFC with a flashlight, if water is pooling you will have a problem with FAE and humidity, at least I did anyway but I found an easy way to drain excess water without removing cakes.

Unreal, the wood stove has to be the best method ever for drying (not that I know much)....I had a couple of small guys to dry out and it absolutely obliterated the moisture in a VERY short amount of time.......Highly recommend the wood stove drying
