So who here is completely sober?
    #14039616 - 02/27/11 11:16 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I started up NA again and was sober for 45 days before a slight hiccup last week. So for the last 60 days, I've had all but 2 days sober!

Who else is with me?

No Probation for me. I did rehab and NA about 2 years ago because my family wanted me to. Did about 4 months of NA and was drinking and doing all sorts of drugs after meetings.

This time, it was for myself. I had a minor slip up earlier this week, but I'm tired of the ups and downs of drug abuse. Just sick of altering my consciousness.

So since Jan 15 I've had a pint of Wild Turkey, a 5th of Vodka and that's it. back to back.

And I felt it too. Man it hurt too, it took a toll on me that took a while to resolve. I'm glad I have a hard nosed sponsor that can call me out on my bullshit.

I dont give a shit if other people on these forums have fun with mushrooms, lsd, mdma or whatever. But it became a BIG problem for me.

So it's time to lead the sober life.

I'm sober.  Quit burning weed for a while.  just trying to get my head clear.  I was burning like 6 blunt average every day for a while, and everyday for the past few years and have just felt cloudy.  It felt like it was making me anti social too, and quiet all the time.

It sucks because I can't sleep some nights, and it also sucks not hanging out with some friends because all we would ever do when we hung out was get stoned and sit around.  I'm just tired of the same ol' same ol'.

Since Jan 15 I have all but 2 days sober.

Pretty good. Especially since I can't stand smoking weed any more.

If so I'd have just swapped my alcohol and Speed addiction for it, but Cannabis just doesn't jive with me.

Why come on the forum?  It just seems like a bad place for temptation.  I plan on returning to my old ways after this is done and find others mistakes useful, that's why I'm here.

Not attacking your decision at all, I'm glad you've got a good sponsor and the ability to admit you have a problem.  I just think its a good idea to cut strings to "negative" influences.

Eh, talking about drugs on a drug forum is just like talking to someone outside these forums about "war stories".

It's not really a trigger. I don't get on these forums and read about drugs and start craving.

Hell, I could get on CNN and read about Charlie Sheen's newest antics and crave alcohol and cocaine. But I don't.

It's fuckin funny though, one dude the other day brought up Charlie Sheen. He went on this huge rant about that asshole. It was hilarious.

But also, Martin Sheen was quite the addict in his early days. Apocalypse Now, he was drunk as hell for some of it and had a heart attack while filming when he was like 37.

Eh, Alcohol is my major problem.

I quit the speed and opiates a while ago. As well as the Ecstasy, LSD and cocaine.

But alcohol.... You walk into a store and BAM, there it is. Walk into a grocery store and they have 2 fucking rows of beer and wine.

Bastards.

Been smoking :happyweed: for just about 2 years straight. Recently been thinking about quiting or just taking a long break to fix my tolerance. So far I've made through this weekend.

Went off a big note though, couple bowls of keif. Also drank some caffeine for the first time in about 2 years straight while smoking. Now I'm able to drink coffee to get not sober, its weird, my mind just wants to be influenced by something. I went from caffeine to weed and now back to caffeine.

When the cops get involved, you know its a fuckin party.

He's like Tom Sizemore. Minus getting caught on a UA with a fake dick.

I have much more respect for Tom than I do Charlie.... He's flaunting his addiction and trying to pass it off on everyone else but himself.

He's either going to be found dead in a hotel room in the next year or he's going to do the bullshit Lindsay Lohan approach to recovery multiple times until he's found dead in a hotel room.

Addiction is such a fucked up disease. I almost wish I had cancer rather than addiction. At least cancer can be cured.

What do you do with your time now that you're mostly sober.

My dad started eating Altoids all the time and taking me on long car rides to stay fully sober.

I on the other hand come on drug forums and add little content of my own. Also I work every shift I can.

i only trip once in a while, but otherwise I'm pretty much sober.  Occasionally I'll take ecstasy like 3 times a year tops, but really, I dislike most drugs and feel like they should be used once in a while - unhealthy if done too often and lose their luster after time

I actually go to meetings and have nearly six months, but I still post on the forums and talk about my old drug experiences. It's probably counter productive to my recovery and shows that I have some reservations but fuck it.

Alcohol brought me to my bottom and I had seizures from withdrawal symptoms but I go to the other fellowship because it's more all-inclusive.

I feel that personally getting my shit out in the open, even though it is the internet helps.

It's a lot easier to let loose with your feelings than it is with people in real life.

I did the whole rehab thing, because it was court order.  I did 8 months sober, but I think it helped me a lot.  I am not sober anymore, though.

Im sure my sponsor would have a field day if I told him about the shroomery.

Another reason I stick around is it's about to be mushroom season and I still wanna hunt edibles.

There is alot more to this place than drugs...most people dont get that...there are some people here who dont do drugs and have never done drugs.

Saw where you said you just smoke some and drink some occasionally, but you said pretty much.  Just curious if you still take psychedelics on special occasions?

Sober here after way too long in alcohol haze - just decided I was done killing myself.  No therapy - no AA - I was just done.  Withdrawal sucked. I did it all alone - locked everyone out until I came out the other side. You want to (and can) die.  Made it through.  I'm done.  I'm sure I will slip someday but I know now that I was missing out on life.  I get more done in a day now than I would in a month when drinking...

I have great people in my life and the most wonderful beautiful woman a man has ever had - she stuck by me - even in the really dark times.  She's a keeper!  Life is good for now.......

I'm sober for the most part, I partake in ayahuasca ceremonies once or twice a year (meaning 3-4 days of drinking in a row). And am sober for the rest of the time. So i'm not completely sober, but close enough to make me happy.

Not me.

Ever since I started taking clonazepam, which was about...two years ago, I don't qualify for being sober. I take the equivalent of 80mg valium a night.

At least I kicked the Seroquel for insomnia five months ago. That is classified as an anti-psychotic, but it's really a "major tranquilizer". You could make someone pass out instantly if you put that shit in a syringe and shot them up with it. Especially the doses I was taking. I would sleep 16+ hours a day.

How did I function? I didn't. I failed all my classes while I was taking that crap. I would sleep right through all of them. Set me back in college two entire years.

Well I take 2mg Klonopin and 1mg Xanax a day to control the panic attacks I used to have, but I hardly think that qualifies as drug abuse. Hell, I don't even feel them any more.

They just make me less agoraphobic, able to be around people, and most importantly they keep me from freaking out and having massive panic attacks.

Hell, before, I used to have to get drunk just to get my hair cut. I was that terrified to be around people I didn't know.

It still affects me. :frown:

It does prevent panic attacks for me though

I don't feel comfortable driving or traveling.

It really only helps me when I am around other people or if I'm trying out something extreme (like going on an insane roller coaster at Six Flags).

I do feel you on the social phobia though. I used to get extremely nauseous if I was around other people because I was terrified.

I've been taking a break from my compulsive habits of drinking and smoking weed. I did drink one beer last night and smoked my last bowl with a friend who came by who was out of weed, but other than that, I've been pretty much sober for a week. Having a bad sore throat/cold helped. I like to take a break when I feel like the compulsion is getting beyond my control.

never. caffiene is like a constant... and THC.

psychedelics and other dr00gs like MDMA i only do on the odd occasion. sometimes close together but most of the time not.

don't use "addictive" drugs but i have tried them... and more then once but... never had a habit other then weed and caffiene.

Uh? Alcoholism/Addiction IS a disease.  Recognized by the American Medical Association...  jussayin; you might wanna check your facts on that...

I do; however, understand your position, how could it be a disease when one has the CHOICE.  but the drinking/drugs are but a symptom of the disease; its the obsessive THINKING that goes on in the mind of an addict that characterizes him as such... Read the book "Alcoholics Anonymous" written by Bill Wilson (the founder) and read the chapter titled "The Doctors Opinion"  Pretty sure its the 1st chapter. (you could probally check it out on amazon) It gives you a good break down of why its considered a disease... but whatever :justdontknow:

SOrry to resurrect such an :oldthread: but I wanted to try and correct that bit of misinformation...

I have been clean and sober now for over a year.. one day at a time; cant think about tomorrow... I'm clean! JUST FOR TODAY!

I love it! I was hooked on REEFER... and never felt "Okay" without it. now I can think straighter; have more $$$$, not be lazy, make better decisions; I'm in touch with my emotions; and I can have true honest relationship(s) with other human beings... that are based on love and mutual respect; not on how much of what substance do I have; and how much am I willing to share...  I've got REAL friends today.

Anyway; good thread, thanks for reading! Love ya'll! have a nice day!

And I keep coming back (here) b/c Its a really cool community of some REALLY COOOOOL people; and it doesn't affect my sobriety in the least! I don't ENVY people that get high; I feel SORRY for them, and hope one day they will be able to get their act together! and if its not a problem for them, my hats are off to them, I just never was able to "Use" (drugs) successfully...

I tried my best to get sober a few weeks back.

I was clean for 2 weeks, then I realized I didn't want to cut weed/booze out of my life completely. I do them on occasion now

Today's my first day being sober. I'll probably still drink a beer occasionally, but I'm gonna take a tolerance break from the herb for a week or two.

Drug use is a symptom of many different problems. I started using drugs because of extreme depression and anxiety in my teens. It progressed farther and farther until I was a full blown multiple drug addict and alcoholic. I couldn't function without a drug or a drink in my body. Hell, I couldn't even get my hair cut without having a couple shots of bourbon or some beers so I wouldn't freak out when the hairdresser would talk to me.

Taking a drug is a choice, that is true. Addiction is not a choice. You just can't choose to not be an addict. But from what I've learned, you don't have to pick up a drug again, that is a choice that I had no idea I had before. I was so used to eliminate or change my emotions with drugs for about a decade.

If you don't believe it, sit in a NA meeting and listen to what people have to say. It's pretty powerful stuff. Believe me, the crack head in the alley or the dude on the side of the road panhandling for change isn't doing that because they want to. They are doing that because they are ADDICTED. Whether it be drugs, alcohol or anything else.

I'm just so happy that since mid January, I've only gotten drunk like twice. And I used to be a speed addict, an alcoholic, an ecstasy addict and I had a brief stint with cocaine addiction.

And now I'm clean. My thoughts are clearer, I have a relationship with my family and friends, I can care about others, I have money in my pocket that, I can pay bills, I can not worry about driving home intoxicated.

So to whoever that doubts addiction as a real medical condition, FUCK YOU.

It certainly isn't a disease. Unless you mean a disease that is embedded in all of our genetic code, making the entire population susceptible.

But that doesn't match the definition of a disease...That sounds more like human genetics.

Once you've gotten there, it becomes much more than a habit; but to call it a disease is a copout. It was your own actions that led you down that road.
Disregard to consequences is a bad way to live.

I am sober almost always but I enjoy the very occasional trip. Of course, this is if we are disregarding caffeine, if it is in the box here, I am like never sober.

But what if you can't control your actions? I know it's not a disease in the traditional sense, but it's certainly a psychiatric disease (or disorder). Whatever you want to call it.

Just like depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia.

People don't chose the lifestyle of an addict because they are normal every day run of the mill 9-5 people. It starts with emotional or psychiatric pain and goes completely fucking off the wall.

I know a girl that spent $90,000 on coke and heroin in less than a year. Would a normal person do that?

I also have a friend that used to snort oxy, heroin and coke as well as trip on acid and mushrooms and really good ecstasy every night for a long time (alternating of course). He was able to stop it all. He wasn't an addict. He just got high for fun. It baffles me. These days he has maybe a small glass of bourbon a night and if he goes to the bar he has 2-3 beers.

Not an addict.

Last time I saw him (he moved out of town for a job) around christmas, he had maybe 3 fingers of makers mark while I drank an entire 5th of Wild Turkey 101.

I envy people that can use responsibly. I really do.

You just need to realize that you can.

The psychiatric disorder these people suffer from is lack of self restraint. I agree that some are much more likely to fall in the pits of it, but we can all make a conscious effort to fight it.

I'm having my own struggle with not smoking cannabis right now. I know it sounds lame, but goddamn do I love me a bowl of herb to finish off the day.
Sometimes I get in this mindset where I justify me smoking weed, and it all seems to make perfect sense. I get euphoric just thinking about the satisfaction of being high for a little bit.
But then I have to sidestep that stream of logic, and address the consequences of my actions. I need to lower my fucking tolerance and I can't do that if I'm smoking all the time!

I know this sounds like child's play compared to addictions resulting from hard drugs, but take it all as a metaphor for something bigger.
Human psychology is rather universal.

I have only met one person that was in Narcotics Anonymous because he only smoked weed.

Everyone else had problems with much harder drugs.

I wish I could enjoy weed. I'd be fine with it. But I had to stop in like 2008. It just gave me so anxiety it was completely not enjoyable.

i don't get anxious but i get extremely bored, zoned; and feel like a recycle my sub-conscious patterns, more then usual, when i smoke more for more then a couple days.

i take sorta week long breaks... but sometimes i'll smoke a a joint or a couple bowls with someone.

like today... totally didn't intend on getting any weed today but an awesome friend, who will be referred to as Dylon who Spits Mad Fire, spotted me (as in gave me out of nowhere) a fin for no reason... and now i am smoking buzzed as fuck.

I'm sober by choice.

Mushrooms made me this way. It's like they amplify my senses and I can actually feel what's good and bad for me. I hardly do them anymore tho. But if I could be constantly tripping on shrooms, I would.

Weed makes me lazy.
Beer makes me fat.
Other Alcohol makes my immune system not work properly.
I don't really do/try other drugs.

Although I plan to smoke some DMT one day... take a peek deeper into reality.

i'm not saying it's "psychedelic" and that's why, or anything like that... just saying, it seems to effect people in  different ways.

I like this thread.  I'm gearing up for another break, or term of sobriety, it's a pattern I've been going through for the past few years.  Most sober time I ever had was a year, but I also have had 10, 8, and 6 months over the past 6 years.  Always in and out of the program (AA).

And MisterMuscaria... I agree with what you said about your sponsor having a field day if you told him about your shroomery habits.  That made me LOL.  Because I've been through the same shit with sponsors before.  Too funny...

I've been sober off of heroin beer and weed for just about 15 months, I drank ayahuasca about half a year ago. Life's good :awesome:

Glad to see you've turned things around :sun:

Seems like the second day after I stop smoking weed, I get hit with the sensation of human hormones. Testosterone and all that goodness.
Anyone else experience this?
It's pretty refreshing actually. Makes me want to seriously cut down on the smoking when I do start again.

Sober! I did smoke a light amount of herb last night, but I'm sober 6 days out of the week now.

Last year-Total trainwreck, crack, oxy, alcohol, weed combos nightly. November>March- clean as a whistle, March>July-weed frequently to celebrate returning to school successfully and getting A's; July>near sobriety except for 2 recent shroom trips, and toking last night. Being sober is more fun that I thought!

I thought I clarified that; :sorry:  I meant I feel sorry for ADDICTS who are still using and can't seem to be able to quit.  if its not a problem for you; then, as said, my hats are off to you,

but, if you're like me, and you're powerless over over drugs and they control your life, then yes, I DO feel sorry for you b/c I've been there, and its no way to live.

but do I hate drugs and think nobody should use them? absolutely not... I just know that I can't use them (Successfully)

Sober, no. Non-addict, yes. I keep all of my drug use within reasonable amounts. Weed and booze/liquor once or twice a month and shrooms whenever I find enough to fuel a fun night for me and a few close friends.

Also weighing in on the addiction is a disease argument... I hate when people use that line. In reality it does, by definition, qualify as a disease; but it's a massive nuisance that people have been told this. Now instead of taking responsibility for their behavior, people just cry foul and say, "I HAZ A DIZEEZ!" I used to eat Adderall and Dexedrine like fucking candy, and lo and behold I got addicted, which was completely my fault. Then I quit and ended up wasting a week in bed being insanely depressed, and I hate pussies who wallow in their own pity, but there I was doing exactly that. So I have absolutely no sympathy for addicts. BUT... On the "it is a disease" side of the fence, the person who said they choose to have the disease, while I can see his stance on the issue, is wrong. They made the decisions leading up to becoming an addict, but they didn't choose to ultimately become an addict. Saying that is the equivalent of saying that a smoker chooses cancer, those who worked in the coal mines chose to get "black lung," or an office worker, computer programmer, or guitarist chooses carpal tunnel syndrome. Sure they made the decisions leading up to their disease, and had full knowledge that the disease was a possible consequence of their actions, but they didn't choose the disease. They can't blame anyone for their condition since it's their own fault, but that doesn't mean they aren't diseased.

TL;DR - It is a disease, but that doesn't mean you get to use that fact as a cop out. Quit being a douche and a pain the ass to those around you and be liable for what you do.

Well it looks like it does qualify as a disease under the dictionary term, but when someone says disease you think something that is curable.
The genetics that make us susceptible to addiction is incurable, it will always be embedded into our DNA. We are all addicts in our own right, as it is part of being human.
It is a genetic disposition that we are all at risk of succumbing to.

Were you referring to me as the poster who said that an addict chooses to be one?
If you interpreted my message as such, you misunderstood me.

Mostly sober these days. I can't smoke due to probation, which is terrible. As for alcohol, I went 2 months without a drink but I've broken that streak lately. However going from binge drinking every weekend to having 2-4 beers once or twice a month is a massive improvement for me. God damn I wanna smoke weed though

I'm not using it as a cop out in any way shape or form. I'm merely explaining my actions as a result of addiction. True, it was my choice to use drugs and drink alcohol and I accept full responsibility for that. But at the same time, my addictive tendencies didn't allow me to have a choice in the matter. I didn't realize I had a choice not to use those drugs or drink that alcohol. I was so caught up in the addiction that I just kept going and going. I thought I was going to be dead before I was 30.

Now I realize I have a choice. I chose not to self destruct any more. And hopefully that choice will continue until I die. I have a lot of work to do on myself to keep myself sober. I spent 10 years tamping down my feelings with drugs because I didn't know how to deal with them. I'm just now figuring out how to do that. It's an ongoing process, one that I am completely willing to give my best effort.

But at the same time I'm just one drink or drug away from going right back out there and killing myself with substances.

Click HERE.... CLick on "Look Inside"  ...Go to page XXV  Chapter titled "THe DOctors Opinion" That will explain to you in plain english about the "Disease" aspect of addiction... it describes it as people having an Allergy to the alcohol(Drugs) that once they put it in their body... all bets are off...

40 days clean from heroin here.  I should probably stop drinking as much as I do too but the extent to which alcohol is embedded in our culture and the ease at which partaking it leads to picking up women makes it difficult indeed.
