jar SHAPE (not size)
    #14039504 - 02/27/11 10:59 PM (13 years, 5 days ago)

so I have some half pint jars, but they are slim and tall, not short and fat, like the old traditional ones I use to have. Does anyone think that it will make a difference?

Not sure about the shape but the mouth is what counts. Wide mouths are used because the mouth is the same size as the body of the jar, which makes birthing fully colonized cakes a cinch. Normal half pints with a constricted mouth are bad.

Yes it matters.  The jar should not be taller than it is wide.  Use the wide mouth 1/2 pint jars.

Because they rarely colonize.  They're deep so the substrate packs, which starves the mycelium for air.  Questions like this can easily be solved with the search posts function.  It's been answered hundreds of times.

I have used the 1/2 pint jars that are more tall then wide with no problems, so I don't know why there would be an issue using them.

Like RR said they compact and starve the bottom of the substrate from air.  Also, what happens is half way through being colonized the mycelium growth rate slows to a crawl.  Meanwhile the substrate at the top of the jar has colonized fast due to the jar being thin....So that by the time the bottom is almost reached, the top of the substrate in the jar will begin to dry and pin early which is another disadvantage.  So even if it didn't pack itself you still run the risk of the top finishing way before the bottom.

The advantage of the short fat jars is they are basically as tall as they are wide.  So that by the time the mycelium colonizes the middle of the jar it is about to finish the bottom of the jar.  Makes for a more even finish.  And of course they don't pack....
