pint jars vs half-pint- opinions?
    #14039487 - 02/27/11 10:57 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

What kind of differences can i expect to see if I use full pints of brf/verm vs. half-pints?

Ideally, I'd like to think I'd get a better yield out of the same space i currently have 24 half-pint cakes in.  True or no?

Pint jars are a fail. Half pints are used because if there's any contamination (and there's usually a little) the myc will win the race and fully colonize the space its given in a predictable amount of time. Pint jars, even given a month, may never fully colonize due to the size.

If you're concerned about yield and space, you should probably get into bulk grows with monotubs, grains, etc.. Bulk grows take longer due to an extra step but the yields are impressive.

If you're gonna stick to BRF cakes, always, ALWAYS use half pints.

Not if its done right. I'm currently at 90% in 3 weeks, which is a little slower than the optimal 20 days, but it is my first ever grow. But yes, it will take twice as long. Pints can be used, but half pints are preferable.

What extra step? Do you mean spawning? That's an optional step.

how is spawning an optional step in a bulk grow? you need to let it colonize if you want to do bulk?

I started 9 pint jars thinking it woud be beneficiary to have bigger cakes, I WAS WRONG i lost 2 to contams which i think is good considering I didnt use a dry verm layer or tyvek filter, just masking tape which i later removed and it drastically sped up colonization. I started the jars on 1/17 and they will be at full colonization within the week.

Don't use pints, it will lead to alot more failure than 1/2 pints.....and make sure you get the short fat 1/2 pints, not the tall ones
