Hey guys im about to start growing san pedro but i have a quick few questions....
I was listening to a video and the lady said they grow best in indoor cold climates..but then she says they love to be in hot desert like places... so wtf!?
I also read that within the 1st 3-4 weeks of growing the cactus it said to keep it in the shade way more than the sun.. is it true?
I bought soil, rocks and also some perlite i hope its good enough..
anyways ima be growing the cactus indoor so if you guys have any tips it would be very helpful because from reading i have been getting alot of different info... some say when u water the cactus then put a bag over it to keep it humid but then other sources say to just water it a little bit and keep it in the sun.. idk confusing as hell.. so i need a little help guys.. thanks!

eh, it's a plant i wouldn't overthink it... water when the top 3 inches are dry... don't let the cactus sit directly in the sun, this burns them...

I don't know if this is the answer but, deserts have huge swings in temps. Even though they may have 100+ (f) temps in the day, the nights can get really cold.

Hey bruff, I've been growing Pedro for a couple of years now and they're pretty low-maintenance.
Keep em out in the sun, as much sun as possible, they fucking love sun.
However, if it is really sunny and like 40 degrees, which sure, may be the conditions in the deserts, give em some shade or move em to a situ where they can get partial sunlight. because it all relative brother - they be used to the conditions of wherever you are, and I'm guessing it ain't in the desert.
Long story short, they love sun, but not shocks via abrupt changes in conditions.
Your soil mix sounds good! a good tip is to remove pieces of tanbark from it if it was a pre-made cactus mix from your nursery, because instead of the precious nutrients in the soil going towards the growth and health of your cactus, they go to breaking down these woodchips - so you wanna channel the energy to your buddy
Water them like once a month during the cold half of the year, even move em in under cover if they're getting too much rain.
One of mine which is growing log style on my garden has been getting too much rain. As a result, it's defence against insects is compromised, because the water has diluted its concentration of mescaline and other alkaloidal compounds. Thus insects have had a good ol time chomping it good. It's still surviving though, but a couple of its new pups suffered to the insects.
Are you growing from seed or cutting?
Good luck! Once they're rooted they're pretty hardy and strong. You'll love growing with them

haha fcking great man!! thanks alot! perfect info, yea i am growing from seeds and you telling me that my soil mix is good is even a better relief because i honestly just guessed on a mix lol... i live in North carolina and here atm during the day it does get sunny but its a bit windy and temps are about 55-65 F and then at night it gets a bit more chilly into the 30-40s... so during the day i leave the cactus outside? and then when nightfall arrives do i put the plant inside under a light with about the same temp as outside so it doesnt get shocked? or when u say shocked.. are u talking about like differences like more then 40 degrees difference ?

I'm from Australia so I really only work in degrees celsius, but you should be fine leaving them outside in that climate. no need for the indoor light setup.
If you're looking to grow them for harvest, then water them sparingly - for the more stressed they are, the more alkaloids they will produce. Hence they will be more potent.
If, like me, you're growing them because they are fucking awesome beings as well, then yeh, leave it up to Mother, water maybs once a week or fortnight. I actually haven't watered mine in months, and it's summer (albeit the last day) over here! but that's only because we've been getting plenty of rain in Melbourne lately.
Sun, sun, sun! Otherwise they can get black spots on them which are unsightly.
The mix doesn't have to be spot on, just make it keeping in mind how well you want it to drain. and remember, try your best to simulate a desert soil.
With raising them, I raised mine from cuttings so I'm not sure about seeds.. If you have other cacti you can graft the seedling onto them in order to accelerate growth.
It'll get used to your climate, but if there's a sudden change in it like a massive flooding thunderstorm spanning 2 days, or 3 days of freakishly hot weather, it might be a good idea to put em under shade.
But really man, don't fret once they've rooted, I'd imagine you'd have to take more care in their seedling phase, but there is info in the Ethnobotanicals section for that I'm sure

hehe no worries man spread the knowledge, spread the vibes
and tapwater should be fine. Unless you're on a boat in the middle of the Pacific! and it better be a boat because you wouldn't want cacti anywhere near inflatable rafts..!
