I cannot truly convey just how important unadulterated wilderness is to myself and the other 6.5 billion of us existing on this planet. It seems to be a mysterious thing whose comprehension lies outside the bounds of my ability to understand just how intertwined my living is with the living of other beings.

For me, I often feel a sense of awe, humility, and fear mixed with deep respect when in the presence of true wilderness. Something some might call "spiritual" seems to be present in nature although the nuances of it are unclear to me.

I think if "wilderness" is somehow eradicated in our world there will be something in all of humanity that dies with it. I know, sounds like some hippie bullshit but it's just something i believe.

"We are all intoxicated. We were born into an insane asylum, a world crazy-making. We believe what we see and hear. The real myth is the myth of sanity, of rationality: it's a disease that is eating away at the earth. All the poisons flow from our denial. We deny madness, we forget our crimes, we dismember the corpse, we imprison our children. We need poison to poison the poison, to remember the sacred nature of intoxication, the green body of the young god." ~ Dale Pendell

the BWCA really is amazing and i too would recommend anyone with the opportunity to visit.

As discussed already wilderness isnt very descriptive. The BWCA would be an example of a pristine example of wilderness maintaining all off its historic biotic and abiotic functions that make the ecosystem cyclical and self sustaining.

In restoration ecology as an ecosystem receives impacts from a variety of sources it exerts both resistance (a defense mechanism) and resiliance (a recovery mechanism). If enough impacts have pushed an ecosystem to a critical load it will be pushed over a threshold. Threshold is a point where plant and animal communities are changing and there is a loss of system control. Ex: watershed.

I believe there are 3 thresholds before a landscape is worthless. The third threshold is loss of all system functions and desertification.

Though most do not recognize this we are a huge part of and have huge impacts on ecosystems. The question isnt about putting preservation ahead of society, but educating people to interact with environment with a stewardship mentality. This goes for agriculture, forestry, watershed management, energy production.

Even the placement of windows on your house effect solar heat gain, loss, and usable light which equate to energy.

Because population growth correlates with the use of resources and land use. IE good farmland shouldnt be a woodland blah blah blah there will be more pressure to harvest resources set aside in state and national parks

IMO Food systems, energy farming, and private wilderness restoration are revolutions just around the bend. Someday ill be growing hemp, pelleting it, and burning it to heat my water and home; all of that will be done within a 1/2 of a mile reducing use of petroleum for transportation and processing.

i could continue to rant but im sure this will get passed over due to length as is.

I feel the same way. There is something about seeing society from a perspective which is outside of it that brings a feeling of awe.
