Bassnectar in KC last night

show number 4 for me. i ate 2 hits of the 2010 hofmann print.
absolutely fuckin AMAZING!!! every show he one ups himself. i never think its possible but then he just drops the most insanely complex tight ass beats. it was pure raw, psychedelic, orgasmic, mind blowing BLISS!!!
i dont care if you say you dont like electronic music. if you like acid or molly, GO SEE BASSNECTAR!!! its the rawest most perfectly psychedelic show. i cant imagine ANYONE going to see him and walk out saying "that sucked."
i wish i could explain the visualizers. he had LED panels everywhere, and it was set up so it looked like where he was, kept flipping angles and going in circles.. idk how to explain it.
my favorite part of the show was when he played some fox news video clips on the LED panels of sean hannity, glenn beck, sarah palin, and bill oreilly. it was amazing!!! lmao
after the show, my friends and i walked back to the hotel and there was a huge crowd of people at the front door of the hotel. there were about 30 people that were out of their minds fucked up trying to figure out how the door worked. it was one of those big city style circular spinning door. it was hilarious!!!
i knwo this is a random post. but i had to post something about it. it was the best show ive ever seen. and i say that every time i see him. he just keeps getting better!!
anyway, anyone else see last nights show, or any of the other recent shows?

Going to see him in April for the 5th time.
Bassnectar shows are fun.
I'm kinda growing out of the scene tho. All those fucked up kids are just annoying to me now. I used to be one of them.

ive been considering going to madison for the show. i heard about the venue change but have never been to any shows there. i prefer smaller, sold out venues, or festival setting. (cant wait for waka)
StL sold out, but i think i know someone with some tickets for sale.

Sold out venues is where its at. Sold out shows rage so hard.
Festival shows are never as good. The sound is always so-so and it's not as up close and personal. But the overall festival experience is awesome.

Haha, I replyed before your edit.
You want them to change the venue, and I dont.
Bassnectar at The Orpheum would be so much better than at the Energy Center.

The problem with the Orpheum is that there's all those seats in the way. I would have preferred the Majestic though.
The Energy Center seems way too big. Speaking of Bassnectar I gotta keep a look out for molly

I don't think bassnectar is anywhere near the most psychedelic show around. Like really not even close.
Then again, I don't think there's anything complex or raw about his music at all.

fuck molly dude. ACID is the way to go for bassnectar. you wont get the full bassnectar experience without LSD.
hes gonna be making more tight ass music and touring in 5 years from now... you say that like he doesnt have a LARGE following that sells out almost every single show...

Yeah, the seats are kind of a hassle. But I love the way the Orpheum looks and feels. Its got that old style architechture and trippy ceiling like greendreams described. And I love how the entire balcony shakes once the show gets rockin. Bassnectar wouuld have blown that place apart.
But the Energy Center should still be epic.

there's like 100 people i'de rather see on L before bn.
sure his following is huge but i bet most of them will grow out of it.
don't get me wrong his older stuff is much more chill and more suitable to my taste but the stuff he puts out now is just too much for me.

you just dont understand. and you wont until you drop acid and go to a bassnectar concert. until you do that, you wont understand why he has such a devoted following.

Stating my opinion, brah. Your OP was so full of over the top dick sucking it was painful to read. Bassnectar is easily the most overrated producer of electronic music in the world (wait, maybe that's deadmau5, close though) right now.
His music is hard, fast and distorted. It lacks subtlety, depth, and originality. Then again, your average bro music listener could care less about these things. Which is exactly why bassnectar is so popular. As I heard someone else put it once, his music is lowest common denominator music.

Do you now? I watched him for about 20 minutes once before wandering away.

You shouldn't have to eat L to fully enjoy a show or really understand an artist, just saying.
That picture speaks for itself. It's one of the main reasons I hate attending electronic shows. Rolly polly kids are fucking annoying.

Sounds like you've never seen Tipper, SOTEG, Skeetaz, Vibesquad or Break Beat Buddha. Shit Break Beat Buddha taught Loren everything he knows. If Bassnectar is the best you've seen of this kind of music you haven't seen nothin yet. Plus his shows are full of annoying teeny boppers.

EOTO is so much better than Bassnectar imo. Check them out. Each show is completely improvised, nothing prerecorded, all done live. The nectar is simply, like stated above, plain, ordinary, and most of all, easily appealing to the masses, which further emphasizes his lack of complexity while displaying his ability to produce simple music for simple minds. Most of the people I know who are really into music dislike Bassnectar because of that. I think he is one of those artists who is simply fun, nothing more. It's not like I'd go to his show to analyze and dissect the music. There's nothing really to it. IMO he's just another producer in the same worn out groove.
edit: I don't mean to hate on you and spoil your fun. You like what you like. I just believe there is much better music out there

You're the one saying no one will understand why Bassnectar is good until you drop acid at the show.. plenty of music I don't like would sound just fine if I'm tripping hard enough, so I don't understand that statement.
Have you been to many other shows? What about Phish, since you're putting them down? I've been to plenty of jam band shows as well as sound tribe and lotus shows. I hate wompy/bass music, so no matter how much L I could take it wouldn't make me enjoy the show more. Have you seen Bassnectar sober yet?
If this thread is going to turn into a "my band is better than your band" argument, it's going to be pointless. But don't expect everyone else to love BN just because you had an amazing time tripping at his show.

Agree with this only sometimes. His younger work is much more nectar heavy (that's a pretty good word for the spaced out, insane high notes and samples he drops in,) but then again his bass work can be amazing.
I've seen him 3 times now, and from my understanding some nights he's going off with the atmosphere and others are more about the bass. Highly depends on the crowd though, he uses a lot of their energy in his performances. Better crowd will have a much better vibe.

wildchild68 said: I don't think bassnectar is anywhere near the most psychedelic show around. Like really not even close.
Then again, I don't think there's anything complex or raw about his music at all.
Well that honestly depends on what you mean by "complex and raw." It's all subjective, but I can understand where people who have no idea what he's doing, think he's just pushing buttons. Ultimately it's laptop dj'ing, but completely different from what your concept of it is.
His productions are insane, and for that I respect him. His live shows are a spiritual and emotional adventure, and that's why I love him. It's not about whether you care for his music, he isn't making it for you to enjoy. He's doing it because he feels it inside him.
You might think I'm joking, but you honestly would go off and say the same thing (and plenty of people have,) about bands like Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd or whatever. To him it's his calling and he's making the music to fuel his soul.

Plus his shows are full of annoying teeny boppers.
also highly agree with this, alot of what Bassnectar produces is very scenster, or more digestible to the dub and EDM masses. And it's totally apparent in the family photos he takes at every show. But still, the entire fucking jam band/festival crowd is full of scensters. So what's the difference? (speaking to bait_ here.)
I'd also like to point out that, you don't need drugs to enjoy a show...I've seen him sober and left in a very altered state of mind. Has anyone had the chance to see him at Burning Man? You would understand where I'm coming from.

I have been to a Bassnectar show before, and it was tight, but he uses a lot of the same sounds in every song he produces, making it get old quick. Nothing too diverse, and it seems as if he makes his music aimed at the mainstream crowd.

i know there are scenesters in every... scene and there isn't a difference between one and the other.
but the point i was making with that pic and 16yo statement was that it is a younger crowd that can be somewhat obnoxious (like his music is to me)
last time i saw lotus the crowd was dramatically different (younger) then when i saw them @ the same venue just 8 months prior. it gave a weird vibe to the whole show.
i guess what i was getting at is these kids' tastes are still developing (as are mine) and what they like now will probably be different than what they like 5 years from now. I used to be a punk/ska boy

euro dub sucks.
most dubstep sucks balls. ive heard a lot of shit, but nothing has been as appealing to my ears as bassnectar. and from what ive heard, and read from lorin, he isnt "dubstep"
theres a huge difference between dubstep and what bassnectar makes. bassnectar's music is pure pyschedelic genius. rusko and caspa suck balls. deadmau5 is poppy bullshit, and the kids a fuckin snitch.
at least lorin ashton is socially aware and actually DOING something. you know, donating money from shows to good causes and charities. the guy isnt stupid, he knows his shit about music and SOUND especially. if youve been to a bassnectar show youll understand his amazing ability at playing with sounds and fucking with peoples heads. the show is like a rollercoaster except a million times better.
its better while tripping acid because acid is fucking awesome. it would be badass sober too, but who would want to do that when you can increase your sensory perception? thats what the whole thing is about. hence the name BASSnectar. its all about the bass. ive never heard anyone as loud as him. its not just a music show, its taking the sensory experience to the extreme.
keep hatin. dudes makin BANK because hes a musical genius. he sells shows out constantly. everyones reasons as to why he sucks are so stupid and childish. "scenesters" and "candy kids" or whatever. im neither. i dont like the music because it has a scene that follows it. i like the experience of getting splashed with extreme bass. i love the SOUND itself.
fuck you haters. obviously you people like bassnectar enough to come into a thread specifially ABOUT bassnectar, and talk shit about it. if you really hated it and thought it was shit, you would ignore it altogether.

Tons of music sounds absolutely amazing on acid. It's not some secret bassnectar superpower.
I used to think you were okay, but the more you post the more it's obvious that when people have contrary opinions, you just get overly defensive and try to make it personal.

too much music/show elitism going on in this thread. this thread is about seeing bassnectar not whether or not you like his music or his fanbase.
that being said, i've seen bassnectar a few times. twice during FREE shows he did in chicago 2008. once at summer camp 2010. and at the house of blues in chicago during the cozza frenzy tour. was in line to see him in 2009 at a venue in chicago when the show sold out, so went to see pendulum instead.
all awesome shows.
and to the haters: i've been saying that "too much bass, not enough nectar" since cozza frenzy came out. mesmerizing the ultra was a masterpiece. but, you're not bassnectar. you're not gonna change bassnectar's mind, and you're only gonna come off as a bitter elitist posting that in every bassnectar thread. don't like it? either do what he's doing better then him, or shut the fuck up.
arguing about something as subjective as music is completely fucking retarded and pointless

I saw him in Birmingham last Wednesday with Big Gigantic, Alex B, and Ana Sia. The show was definitely fun and I saw a ton of friends that I haven't seen in a while. He did a mash up of Helmet's song Unsung and his song Basshead that was really cool. The afterparty was the best though. I know everybody that works at Zydeco and my crew had back stage access. We smoked out Alex B(Pnuma Trio/Paper Diamond), Dominic Lalli(Big Gigantic), Jeremy Salken(Big Gigantic), and the dj White Noise. We had a BLAST and threw down until about 4am. Good times.

ana sia was badass. i had never listened to her stuff before, she was actually in town a week or 2 ago too but i didnt go. she played while i was coming up on my acid. her light show fucked with my eyes so much it was insane. she was an awesome opener for bassnectar.

know anything about sound frequencies and how they affect the body and mind? not many artists do. and bassnectar has mastered this art.

Because it's one thing to say "I don't really like Bassnectar that much, that's not the music I'm into" but it's entirely different when you say "Oh that guy fucking blows, he doesn't know how to make music worth shit"

Bassnectar shows are fun.
I'm kinda growing out of the scene tho. All those fucked up kids are just annoying to me now. I used to be one of them.
this
i love his shows but theres way too much custiness at his shows now...like im so down with getting all fucked up but theres way too many kiddies at his shows now...hes too big for his own good

That picture speaks for itself. It's one of the main reasons I hate attending electronic shows. Rolly polly kids are fucking annoying.
are u fucking kidding me? ur a biscuit fan...like everyone there is rolling face...stfu

Hakim0777 said: his tickets are overpriced and his music is basic as fuck, more basic than skrillex even.
25-30$ is overpriced? damn u need a job son
bassnectar is awesome...his new stuff is prety generic tho...i love him and his shows, but his new EP wildtsyle was fucking trash...timestretch was alright...anything cozza frenzy and before was pretty awesome tho...i miss the days when i could see him in a 500 person venue and still buy a ticket the day of without paying like 150 for it
i hate the direction hes going in, but he is very aware most of his older fans ar ebegninng to not like him anymore...his older tunes were so differnt than his new stuff...like dubusacsa, that track is SICK, he never makes tunes like that...laughter cresendo...that kind ambient sound...so sick...now its just a hip hop sound with a layered bass behind it, nothing very technical at all
i dont like the crowds either, but one thing ill never let affect whether i go to a show or not is the crowd...i know it will be custy but u just gotta get around that and try to not give a shit (even tho sometimes its hard lol)...but no matter what, i will still rage his shows...and his festie sets are soooo sick, if u havent seen one, its so diff than a normal set he drops on a normal nite
im seeing him 2 or 3 times in april, then at starscape wheres hes HEADLINING, and hopefully camp bisco, i honestly expect him to be on that linmeup once it drops, him there last year was BONKERS...and on his site he said sumthing about trying to play a venue like an hour from me in the summer, its a big outdoor venue and he knows people from mass rage sooo hard

no joke, about 95% of the show, simon posford was just standing there with both arms in the AIR dancin around. he hardly DJed at all.
shpongle is better when im sitting at home tripping and listening to them with my own speakers. thats pretty much how the concert was. it was really disappointing. ill never go to another shpongle show again.

but STS9 did have a pretty epic encore...it was almost like a heavy rock song...idk like i said i was dosed, but i remember really liking the encore

i think youre jealous. are you a DJ or something?
he makes millions because hes a fuckin genius. its not a fad. he has a lot of very dedicated fans. hes got lots of followers. its not because its the cool thing to do, its because hes one of the most, if not THE most, badass DJs and live performances going around right now.
dude, i cant imagine any other artists being able to pull off the shit he pulls off. the live show is like a psychedelic amusement park ride. your body entire being shaken and vibrating at different frequencies... its orgasmic for christs sake. he uses a sound setup unlike anyone else. ive never heard bass THAT fuckin loud and deep. he knows what hes doing. he knows how to control how the audience feels and what emotions they feel. when he plays, HE is in control of the entire crowd. its magnetic. hes on another fucking level. i dont care what you say, no other DJ can top him.
call that dick sucking if you want, but im keepin it real. bassnectar live is absolutely amazing. i was literally amazed. no one else can actually make me feel that. when was the last time YOU were stuck in amazement for 2 hours straight?
if you dont like bassnectar, stop posting in this thread. youre being a complete asshole. i made this thread looking for other FANS who recently saw him or are getting ready to see him so we could talk about the show and the experiences we had. im not looking for some asshole to keep coming in here and talking shit about what the subject of my thread, or me personally for what im saying. quit being a prick and get the fuck out of this thread.

Bassnectar is a fad...i bet half of his "fans" are there just for the scene and drugs...bassnectar blew the fuck up between cozza frenzy and timstretch...before that he wasnt that well known...i bet a LOT of his fans dont know any of his tunes before cozza frenzy dropped...if u went to his show and said "i Love LSD"...more people are gonna assume ur talking about the drug, instead of his track "LSD" (which is one of my favs by him)
not to burst your bubble, but i think dubstep and bassnectar is a fad...soon it will be onto the next thing and the only ones left are gonna be the people who were there before it got popular...not tryng to be a dick, i mean i love bassnectar, but i definitely think hes a fad, along with dubstep as a whole...ill still be here after tho
if and when he gets less popular, it will be so great to see him in small venues again, dropping older breakbeat/ambient style beats instead of only bass in your face...id love to see him producing older style beats to get his shitty new fans off his dick

yeah buts whats an arist without his fans? if its a fad for his fans then its a fad for him
i said i like him dude, but for most people it is just a fad, and if u dont believe that then u havent gone too enough events, he cnat be making beats like this forever, just look at how different he is now than when he was making MTU, hes bound to move into a new direction eventually, and only the real fans will follow him once he does that
i remember when BN shows were about having fun and bass music, not everyone is there simly for drugs...the older crowds were soooo much cooler, anyone who went to bassnectar before his cozza frenzy/timestrecth tour can agree with me here
and he used to always have a ton of random songs to play live, like he doesnt even have that anymore...it seems like he replaced his secret tracks for tracks by bigger DJs, hes ALWAYS bumping other producers tunes like they are his (Flux's Gold Dust for example...sooo many people thought that was his track, cuz he dropped it so often)
EDIT - for STS9, i saw them in boston with Lotus last summer...to be fair, STS9 was probly my fav jam band ive ever seen

lol@ STS9 being a jam band. They are nowhere near "jammy". When did improvisation become "jamming"?
And it was Heavy

i wonder how many people at bassnectar shows are trying drugs for their first time? must be a pretty high percentage
my first BN show i went to i ate 2 hits of acid and .3 of molly...but at that point i had done acid like 15 times and a form of ecstasy like 5-10 times
once at a pretty lights show (who is basically same thing as nectar, in terms of popularity and kids, and kids doing drugs for their first time) me and a bunch of friends saw this kid in the bathroom who probly did K for his first time, or at least his first K hole...he had that K face thing going on and hes sitting in a stall with no pants on and shit literally everywhere, worst thing ive seen at a show that didnt involve an OD...things like that piss me off, fucking idiots
doing a drug at a concert for the very first time is probly not a good idea

Obviously, you and I have very different opinions on what is good. Every Sector 9 fan absolutely hates both of those encore songs, because they have no spirit. No heart. Whatever though. Different strokes for different folks. Carry on.

From reading all your comments, I'm getting this vibe that you think your opinions are superior to mine and everyone else's; in fact, a lot of people seem to have this attitude in this thread.
I'm here to talk about bassnectar, and drugs. And I'm here to talk with people who have an open mind. Everyones gotta stop being so condescending.

And GloGli, What is Love? to end the set? The set was a heater, but the encore killed that show. I remember the LD peeps bitching up a storm about that bogus assed encore after that heater of a set. Goes to show what a lot of these new people to the scene see in the newer songs vs. the older material. I'm completely at a loss as to how someone can like Heavy and BRN more than say a Move My Peeps or And Some Are Angels. It's just too bizarre to contemplate.

You sound like a total custy.
I don't have to enjoy a band to say they're talented. I really don't like Bassnectar but that doesn't mean I'm going to say he sucks and has no talent. Maybe you don't appreciate really instrumental music, but to say jam bands like Phish are only good under the influence is just plain ignorant and makes you sound like an asshole to anyone else who enjoys them.
BTW how can you label Sound Tribe a jam band after seeing only 1 show and not even knowing the songs? How would you know if they're jamming or not.. their songs actually have a lot of structure and hardly go off into random jams. Improvising only a LITTLE, does not place you under the jam band genre.
One last thing, you can't expect to trash a band and then want to stop talking about it after others disagree with your insulting opinion.

i like to be in a spot where i can see the entire lightshow. I dont feel the need to be up front in a sea of sweaty people.

I was deff. a custy the first time I went to a Phil Lesh and Friends show JUST so to score L (my first REAL concert too).. though it ended up changing my life and was just the beginning of the obsession I now have with the Dead.

all im saying is that people who go to jam band shows know where really good acid is...fact
imo jam bands suck, really fucking bad, so at least they are good for one thing, and that good doses
and the only time i really encounter jam band fiends are at festies...believe me, i have ZERO reasons to go to any jam band shows lol

There's no official definition of a made up word, though you can Urban Dictionary it if you want - I used it like I've always heard it being used. I feel like I'm arguing with a little kid, you're not making any points at all you're just trashing other people's genre of music. I'm guessing you don't play an instrument either.

I can't fucking WAIT til he comes to Madison in April. Definitely dropping a ten strip and devouring some molly. Plus it's at the Orpheum, so you can just smoke in there as long as you're careful...there was a hell of a lot of smoking going on at the wiz khalifa concert, that's for sure.

I'm sorry if I came off as argumentative. Let's agree to disagree; obviously we both love different genres but no one is going to be right when it comes to straight opinion.
I actually went to a Big Gigantic show last weekend to TRY it and disliked it, but I stuck around and really enjoyed the vibe of the people who were loving it. I have a great respect for any concert that gets people dancing and having an amazing time.
I know it sounds cheesy, but I feel that music can bring people together more than anything. That being said, I can get carried away and come off as a music snob when defending my own favorite genre. I don't know what I would do without music

Speaking of Big Gigantic, they played an awesome late night set at Nateva right after The Felice Brothers. That was wild!! I love when he rages the sax...I was lucky enough to witness Lalli hop in on an STS9 song during their 2010-08-14 show. I was mesmerized! It added an entirely different vibe to tribe's sound.

Oh hell yeah, Dom always kills it with that saxaphone.
And its always dope when he joins STS9. I think Tribe should just add him as their 6th memeber of the band.
This is my favorite STS9/Dom song I've witnessed live. Empires - 10/9 @ The Eagles Ballroom in Milwaukee It gets good around 3:40 and Dom goes off with the sax around 5:45.

yeah Big G is pretty good but its not really a real dubstep show...they def have elements of dubstep but id call them electronica more than anything...a very jazzy feeling to it, def a unique spin on the genre
ive actually hung out with the guy from Big G at an afterparty for their show a while back...pretty cool dude

Well I guess what I mean is I want him to wail on that thing instead of fiddling with his keyboard and mixing shit on ableton, but then it wouldn't be Big Gigantic. I'm not saying his music isn't good, maybe what I mean is I'd like to see him play in a band where his only role is sax. I've only seen him twice though
