So these look similar to velvet foots except that they don't have attached gills and the fact they're not growing on dead wood. Haven't taken a thorough look into MD yet but took a glance in All That the Rain Promises. The largest of the caps was still smaller than a quarter but a little bigger than a nickel maybe.

I would guess Flammulina velutipes and that there is wood under the soil.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's wood under the soil. It is growing a few feet away from a gigantic patch of pyracantha bushes that are so overgrown that they are trees. I'm 6'3 and don't have to duck to walk under the canopy of the pyracantha.
