how inportant is the wilderness to you?
    #14035787 - 02/27/11 12:44 PM (13 years, 6 days ago)

i have recently moved up north (close to canada) to continue schooling in water shed science and get more in touch with nature.

i absolutely love it up here and sometimes dread even going back home to see family and friends because of how disgusted i get with what we've done to the land over the years. I know a lot of it needs to be done to keep humankind sustained but where does it stop?  Up here i have a gem out my back door with the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.  A real place of pure serenity.  I know there are a good handful of beautiful chunks of wilderness in our nation left but how long will they last.  I moved from a place that once had one of the most beautiful prairies around.  All native flowers and grasses.  After years and years of countless fights with big silica sand mines and petitions the land still got sold and is being decimated to harvest the sand.  It's almost as if all the efforts were futile in the end.

will we ever reach a time where wilderness will come first andthe preservation of it before us?

how do you, my fellow shroomites view wilderness and it's impotance to humanity?

Watershed science near the boundary waters?  I might know what school you go to, good sir!

If I'd grown up anywhere near some form of wilderness, it'd have been pretty darn important to me. Still is, I suppose, except I never seen anything that qualifies like true wilderness. So yeah, I hear you. Is it important to humanity? Well, I'm afraid I'm skeptical there. We do need the biodiversity of the wilderness for some purposes, but I'm not sure to what extent the presence true wilderness is vital for mankind's existence.

Let me bounce the question back at you: what is wilderness exactly? How do you define it?

wilderness to me is where plants and animals still live in their natural habitat, undisturbed.  I am talking thousands of acres where you could actually get lost.  not just patches of woods here and there we've widdeled down to a mere park.  yes parks are nice for family outings an your occasional walks but just think of them before all this and the impacts on the plants and wildlife from it.

where did all the native prairie dogs go from those plains?  in to peoples back yards and are now considered a "nuisance"

Why should it stop? Do you live a technology free lifestyle? Do you live in a home? How many resources from the forest do you use in your day-to-day life?

Are you a part of the market demand for forest resources?

you don't think before you speak do you?

i am not saying i don't contribute at all.  but i make conscious efforts to make my impacts as minimal as possible.

and this wasn't meant to be a pissing contest about who is more environmentally friendly but just how important is the wilderness to an individual. so you can take your elitist attitude and your rhetorical questions somewhere else.

Im for what ever is going to get this world back to what it should be, im not saying their isn't a reasonable way to harvest resources from our environment, its just nowadays its getting out of control.. doesn't anyone remember the huge oil spill in the gulf, how much of that is still going to be around in the future, reeking havoc on the surrounding environment, just to name one incident.

Minnesota! I love the Northwoods. Wilderness is very important to me, although I don't get enough of it in my daily life. I'm in the cities for school and between taking 17 credits and working 25 hours a week it can be hard to find time to get away from it all. I really need that though, I might go on a solo camping trip soon. Wouldn't that be refreshing?

I'll defend any local park from developers with my body, if I have to.

There have been all these talks lately about installing a strip mall and apartment complexes at the waterfront near my home. It's already shabby and neglected because it's small and isolated from the other regional parks so it's not covered by the usual ranger patrols. They told the cops to take care of it, and the cops are too fucking fat and lazy to walk a half a fucking mile away from their cars. I will lie down in front of the fucking bulldozers when they arrive.

That's awesome that you're studying watershed science, though. I thought about doing that for a while... I'm currently studying for neuroscience but it seems like it wouldn't be that difficult to go from that back to watershed science if I wanted to. It seemed really interesting, and the volunteer work I did was also interesting and rewarding, though strenuous.

Wilderness is very important to me, but I think Cronan's perpective on wilderness is worth reading about.  If you have the time check this article out: http://www.williamcronon.net/writing/Trouble_with_Wilderness_Main.html

wilderness is very important to me

I'm a geology major (minor in environmental studies & philosophy)

i live alone and my record low energy bill was $9.73 for a month.

my goal in life is to move to BFE (wherever that may be now days) and have a piece of my own land that i can practice sustainable methods of living (garden, some animals, composting piles, brewing own beer, etc)

i'm not saying i'll have a net 0 carbon footprint but i'm going to try my darndest

oh i also feel the solution to all our environmental problems essentially comes down to population control (there are like 36 wild snow leopards and 7bil people.  WTF?)

Having volunteered at parks, I know how manicured the so-called "wilderness" to be found there actually is. I spent all my time digging up ice plant and cape ivory, so-called contaminants to the ecosystem from South Africa.

I still love the parks though.

Humanity and it's structures are wilderness. It's all wilderness.

I like the cities as much as I like the woods. I hope there is always a place for both.

Personally, I hope that technology reaches such a level of subtlety that we will all one day live in an Eden-like paradise where human settlement and wilderness are indistinguishable.

And when I say "wilderness" I do mean the romantic, pastoral-utopian kind of wilderness... not sprawling deserts of abandoned infrastructure.

What should the world be? The oil spill is a different situation entirely.
One of the reasons the situation is so "out of control" is because of the huge demand for such limited resources and the exponentially increasing population. So, back to my original question. Are you  a part of this demand?
