Baby Steps...
    #14034870 - 02/27/11 09:05 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hello all! I thought to myself a few weeks ago "Hmm... I'd like to try to grow mushrooms..."

3 Weeks later, and enough reading to give me a migraine, and I'm overwhelmed to say the least. I'm no stranger to setting up proper growing environments, nutrient levels and blah blah (as experienced though my Coral Reef Aquarium, Large Container Garden, and Vermicomposting Bin), but mushroom growing may be at my limit.

So I've decided to start out extremely basic, and just buy a portobello & cremini mushroom grow kit. Pretty boring in comparison to the teks, articles, videos, and forum threads I've been pouring through.

My question is after I get the first few flushes in these simplistic Kits, would there be any benefit to adding sterile compost to the box in hopes of fueling additional flushes? Most of what I've read leads me to believe that once it stops producing you just buy another one, but I read a couple articles that talked about self sustaining crops, mostly outdoors though.

Second, can you recommend a reputable and reasonably priced source for these kits? I've googled and found some obviously, but it'd be nice to get a site that has positive reviews.

Any help/suggestions will be much appreciated!

The most benefit you can get is to preserve your original cultures.

After you get a couple flushes it is probably best to start from the beginning, because the myc gets old and isn't as vigorous as it once was.

Get either premade petri dishes or make your own, then inoculate that with your syringe before you use the rest in your kit.

If you want it simple, quick and easy get some oyster spawn and put it on pasturized straw as described in many posts on here.
