PF cake Mycelium while fruiting
    #1403266 - 03/23/03 11:41 AM (20 years, 10 months ago)

Ok so my friend has some PF cakes and he is trying to fruit them in a rubbermaid container with perlite. It has been close to a week now and things looked to be ok until he noticed that the mycelium is starting to grow very thick and outward at the bottom of the cake close to the perlite. The cake is growing mycelium out about a 1/2 Inch thick with stringy hairs in it.
Also there seems to be mushrooms growing off the cake, they are about 2 cm tall and have the exact shape of a mushroom yet the cap remains white? Any ideas my fellow mushroom friends?

Are they sitting directly on the perlite?
This sometimes makes them waterlogged.

There's your answer. Put something between the cake and the perlite, like an upside down lid or a piece of tin foil.

The cakes are not ruined, just a little hairy.  They'll fruit fine.

Wipe the tin foil with alcohol if you are worried about contams.

What about the perlite stuck to the bottom of the cakes? I left it there because I didnt want to damage the cakes anymore than handling them did.
