I was brewing beer before Jimmy Carter made it legal in the US. I'm into a "new" hobby now (albeit my first grow was in 1978). I have found that brewing beer isn't cost effective anymore and is a PIA.
I have a brewer that I get my unpasteurized kegs of ale from. It is SO convenient. I won't discourage people from brewing their own. The raw materials are SO expensive now,it's hard to find a happy medium in that arena.

I just use sugar and yeast. Of course you have to distill it and add orange juice...

Make cider. Can't recall how many apple trees I saw when I lived in the US but I'm sure they're around.
I have a friend who brews 1,000+ pints per year (568ml British pint) from 3-4 trees. He uses old beer bottles and has a press so it costs him nothing really. He brews several strengths and varieties in a shed in his garden.
I don't mean "apple cider" that Americans for some reason think is cider even though it has no alcohol and is glorified apple juice. I'm talking Scrumpy style (google it Yanks).

He basically has to drink or give away at least 3 pints a day of 7%+abv every day to avoid building up a stupid amount. It'll last a year or 2 if stored well he says. Easy as hell and tasty as fuck.

I just picked up a keg today that is 7.2 ABV brewed with roasted chestnuts. It's the second one I've partaked in. It won't last that long though.

So I have made my decision, I am going to go with out gypsum for this batch, as it is my first attempt and I am eager to get started! My jars are on the stove and sterilizing as I type this... Next step is figuring out which strain I am going to inoculate the cakes with. B+ or PES Hawaiian?
Regardless, expect an over enthusiastic grow log to pop up the moment I start seeing colonization :]
Thanks everyone for the input!

I used crushed up drywall in every rye jar I have made. I can't comment on the use/non use though. RR got me convinced that it was helpful.

It's fine without, but better with. I couldn't find it for a couple years.
Then I asked the hippie granola girl with the pierced nose. She pointed right at it: "forty pounds? Or would you like 80?"

I too had difficult time finding gypsum in my area. I literally went to every store in the area and asked around. I just got empty looks. Your best bet is ordering them from one of our sponsors. In the mean time you can find some drywall, pulverize it with a hammer and strain it with a wire mesh strainer for a fine powder. Good luck.

I'm not into the pierced nose thing but the hippy thing sounds great! I loves me some down to earth girls.
I understand that gypsum added to grains will lead to less clumping and added access to minerals in the final substrate. Of coarse I could be wrong.

i've never had a problem finding gypsum, any tractor supply or ace hardware sells it as 'garden gypsum' in pellet form..disolves in water and easily grindable.

Sheetwall works, and if not gypsum is not a necessity. I have had many operations without the help of gypsum

It helps the texture of grains, but you'll be ok without, especially with rye. It's beneficial in bulk substrates too, 2-5% by volume.

Thanks Doc! I have some hpoo that I will be bulk colonizing this weekend. I plan on like 2 cups gypsum per 7 Qts. poo and 2 Qts verm with 4-5 Qts B+ spawn in a 66 Qt monotub. I think for my first grow in 32 yrs. I should be good. My fingers are crossed. Thanks.

It's also sold as 'clay breaker' at least in the UK, you can bet there's some somewhere near you. Hunting for stuff is half the fun.

Sounds great. Add another quart of verm of you have it. And be sure to pasteurize properly, don't just use a bucket.
Should be a helluva grow, we'll want pics.
