I thought finding gypsum would be easier than this...
    #14031200 - 02/26/11 04:14 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I have searched high and low for a small bag of Gypsum. Every hydroponics and gardening store with in 20 miles (this being a rather "green" town there are tons) and not one of them has carried a single bag. I found a source on the internet, but it would take at least a week to reach me.

This makes me a sad panda.

My syringes arrived in the mail today, and everything else is waiting and ready to go. I can be impatient and make my PF Jars with out the gypsum, or wait a week until I have some... The other option would be to go for broke, inoculate 10 jars w/o gypsum, and another ten with gypsum a week later.

What wisdom do you PF-vets have to bestow upon me?
You have my thanks!

I call BS.
You did not go into every local garden center and ask for gypsum.
You may have looked around Home Depot for 20 minutes.

Did you ask someone at the garden store?  First girl I asked had never heard of it and she works at the garden store LMAO...I couldn't find it and then asked another person, they had it stored in the back....and its hard to believe that numerous garden stores didn't carry it...

The mushrooms, which grow only during the season of torrential rains, awaken the forces of creation and produce an experience of spiritual abundance, of an astonishing, inexhaustible constitution of forms that identifies them with fertility and makes them a mediation, a means of communion, of communication between man and the natural world of which they are the metaphysical flesh.

I understand that it's a regional item.
But if you didn't ask the girl with the nosering, then go back and ask her.

Doc T:

I should have clarified that I did not go into the gardening stores, but I did call about 15 over the span of an hour. I went into home depot and a few mom and pop gardening stores, and they did not seem to carry it, and told me they hadn't for a while.

When I made the calls it was mostly to hydroponics stores in the area, and handful of other gardening supply stores. Same answer from each place. They either did not carry it, or hadn't for some time.

But my real concern is the PF Tek and my lack of patience... Should I order some gypsum off the Internet and wait to make my jars, or should I just make one set of jars now, and then another when the gypsum is located? Decisions decisions...

Easiest to find it at gardening stores but if not... try you luck at a store that sells stuff for hanging drywall/plaster, stuff like that.  Gypsum is an additive to plaster so you may be able to find it here. Some people use gypsum to make mead, so possibly a home brewing store.  Check out the uses section on wikipedia for additional ideas if these don't lead anywhere: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gypsum#Uses_of_gypsum

they only go as fast as they go.  Either you will learn to be more patient, or you will fail.  Gypsum is not a must.  If you've got antsies in your pantsies, carry on without it.

I'm sure someone else will chime in on this, I've never had to as the 10 lb. bag of gypsum I bought last will last the next 25-35 years, but can't you just grind up some drywall?

Make two sets or just make all with no gypsum, either way, you won't be dissapointed.

This isn't going to work for you.
There's several items you won't find over the phone, and gypsum is probably the easiest.
Go talk to the girl with the nose ring, she'll know right where the gypsum is.

... Wait until you try to find agar...

Punch a hole in the wall, Grab a hunk of drywall, Stomp up & down on it for a while and  BAM You have gypsum

I have tried to find powdered gypsum but everyone around here sells pelleted. I want the powder but can't find it. A bulk grow calls for about 2 cups of the stuff and I'm tired of crushing drywall for grain spawn already.

Is pelleted gypsum OK to use?

Pellets are fine, I use pellets.
No need to crush, they dissolve.

You don't need it at all, but it will improve results. I did my first few PF attempts without and they worked fine.

By all means practice without first if you are new to this. If nothing else you'll be able to compare results with and without and see for yourself. Nothing like hands on knowledge.

Order some, it will probably last years.

Thanks guys. I am adding it to my rye berries and it seems to be working fine. A mortise and pestal in this day and age just seems so slow. I will just use the pelleted then.

If your garden shop doesn't have hippie chicks and granola girls, shop around.

^^^ expensive gypsum, but yes they have it. Calcium carbonate, most people don't need.
Brew stores also have malt and dextrose.
