    #14031187 - 02/26/11 04:11 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

i have been buying micropore tape and i just noticed it comes in cloth and paper. the paper type claims it is more breathable, and the cloth claims to be stronger. which one should i be buying?

Most people will tell you don't need micropore tape on PF jars.
And I'm here to tell you there's no other use for it besides PF jars.

IOW, unless you are choosing the optional use of it on PF jars, you don't need it.

i'm using it on pf style jars with agar. i got some shiitake, nemeko, enoketake?, and some reshi's going. i've read about it not being the greatest option, but i have had no contams yet.

If you have the dry verm layer as a filter, the micropore tape is optional.
I use it, lots of people don't.
Since all you're doing is sticking it, leaving it a couple weeks, then pulling it, it doesn't really matter which you get.

I'd get the more breatheable unless it cost more.

Hey, I just re-read that... you've got agar in pf jars?
So no dry verm layer filter? Only the tape?

Because I don't think that's a great lid system for agar, though it will work ok for a while.
But it won't matter which tape you use really.

(I like the plastic lids, undrilled, for agar in pf jars.)

i just had to throw something together quick to preserve a few edible wedges i got. my step dad is freaking out about shiitake's. needless to say i had to move. will be cutting down some tree's in a few weeks. i'm trying to get a farm going. Iko Myco. gotta start somewhere. my parents think i'm wasting my time and money. they are fools. i'm sure in the next couple of years i will get things rolling smooth.

Oh, very cool.
I'm waiting on a culture, I'm going to make dowel spawn for friends.
I've never done shiitake, and can't really do an outdoor grow of it where I live.

I know on agar plates micropore is nice to have.. there are also other uses like air exchange in a tub.  Lots of biological needs for the stuff.

I completely disagree. Other than optionally on PF jars, micropore tape isn't useful in this hobby.
Taping patris with micropore tape would be both clumsy and a nasty mess.
