Spawn Bags without Filters. Who uses Them?
    #14030609 - 02/26/11 01:55 PM (13 years, 7 days ago)

Well I have seen filter less spawn bags for sale. I was wondering who buys these bags and what kind of filtering system do you use? Please post up your pictures please and Thank-You. Here are some posts that have homemade filters added to the bags.

I use non-filtered bags. For filters I've either used polyfil in the top or I've cut a 1" hole in the bag and silconed Tyvek on both the inside and outside of the hole.

I'm leaning towards the polyfil at the top, but we'll see how my latest batch goes...

So that is the top to a mayonnaise jar that is Polyethlene terephthalate, 1 on the recycling numbering system. I Google Polyethlene terephthalate for the melting point, it came up as 250 Degrees Celsius. We PC grain at 15 psi or 121.1 Degrees Celsius so this should be fine for PCing.
A 70mm jar lid filter fits into the lid and a regular lid size fits this plastic jar.

Oyster mushrooms colonize so fast, you can usually run them without a filter, as long as you put a good plenum of sterile air in the bag before sealing.  Most other species need a filter for gas exchange.

I can't imagine going to the trouble of using expensive oven bags or non-filter PP bags and then building some sort of filter system, when pre-made bags with proper filters already installed are only thirty cents each.

Roger's right.  There's really no point in purchasing filter-less spawn bags, then constructing a filter for them when unicorn, filter patched spawn bags are commercially available for pennies on the dollar.

The only point for constructing filters onto filterless, autoclave-able bags is when usining large, 4 gallon spawn bags to run 20 quarts of spawn in one container at a time or, unless you already have autoclave-able bags without a filter patch already installed.  4 gallon spawn bags that are clear don't come with filter patches.

RR: I should probably also add that I am working without a flow hood. Once I get the chance to upgrade to that, I'll look into getting legit bags instead of autoclave bags.

To inoculate spawn bags safely without a flow hood, install RTV silicone injection ports onto bags and inoculate with LC.

Whether or not you have autoclave-able bags or mushroom spawn bags without filter patch, it doesn't matter.  A filter patch can be installed onto either one of them as a sufficient means of gas exchange.

I use a glove box and have no problems inoculating bags with grain spawn.

RR: Where are you finding these bags for thirty cents?

The more spawn bags you order at once, the cheaper they are.

In order to pay 30 cents per bag, you'll need to order 1000 or more spawn bags at a time and check around for different sources of spawn bags, comparing prices.  From certain vendors, 42 cents per bag are paid per bag when you order 500 at a time.  When you order 100 at a time, 60 cents are paid.

You were also running Oyster mycelium.  Oyster mycelium colonizes just fast enough that you may get away with running the mycelium without filtered gas exchange.  Most other mushrooms' mycelium colonizes much slower than Oyster mycelium and'll therefore need filtered gas exchange during colonization for indoor cultivation.

Yeah all the bag that I have purchased have filter on them and like you guy said I'll be spending more by making these lids. Thanks for everyone's input.:toast:
