Scientology: Bastard Child of Catholicism

The sacrament of Confession is central to Scientology. They have simply replaced the idea of God with the idea of Technology, and replaced the inscrutable mass of ancient scripture with an inscrutable mass of Space Opera.
As for the behavior of its clergy, I see a remarkable consistency. The two churches would be nearly indistinguishable if not for Catholicism's need to compete with Protestantism.

...and for the fact that there is hardly a single beaner who follows Scientology, while there are millions who follow Catholicism.

Scientology actually has some pretty sophisticated hypnotic techniques though; Catholicism pales in comparison IMO.

I love how L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology, was a prolific science fiction writer before he started the cult... and somehow the cult's beliefs just happen to involve an extraterrestrial god Xenu and space travel.
