Tyvek Sleeves
    #14030176 - 02/26/11 12:18 PM (13 years, 7 days ago)

My tyvek sleeves melted in my sawdust spawn bags. I tried this with two different pc intervals. The first time I thought that maby my pc was to hot, I threw everything out. The second time I brought the pc up to pressure and had the jiggler barely jigging, a few jiggles every couple of minutes. I had used jar lids in between the bags with a plate on top. Did I do something wrong or is it possible i'm not using tyvek? We powder coat things at work. I asked the painters if they had tyvek sleeves, and am using what they said was tyvek sleeves. Also, I got new substrate the second round. Can i reuse this or should i start with new substrate agin?

I use tyvek sleeves for three hours at 20 psi, using the same ones over and over again for the last decade, and have never melted one.  If what you had melted, it wasn't tyvek.  Next time, check the label.

Thanks RR for your quick response. I couldn't check the label as I didn't have one. I'm going to get a pair of these to use for now. Will that work until i get some sleeves? Can i reuse the sawdust/woodchip/bran?

You want medical grade tyvek wrist sleeves over painter's cover-all tyvek.  Medical grade tyvek is the kind that can be reused over and over.  Painter's tyvek pores close every 2 times through the PC due to the intense heat of the PC and'll need to be replaced.  Search ebay for medical grade tyvek wrist sleeves using search words: TYVEK SLEEVES.

As far as reusing the substrate, if your going to do that, load the substrate into new bags fitted with the proper tyvek wrist sleeves and re-sterilize.  Instead of the use of tyvek wrist sleeves to seal bags for sterilization, an impulse sealer can be used prior to sterilization and the bags can be inoculated with LC.

Chad,

I had the same thing happen. Tyvek-like painters suit that filters down to 0.xx microns, other posts on this site recommend it. It halfway melted as well.

Hamloaf, good advice to look for the medical Tyvek.

I wonder if this product would work? I know it works for filtering grain jars, so I can't see why it wouldn't work in the bags.

Don't open the PC for a full 24 hours before removing the blocks from the PC after the sterilization cycle.  Blocks are safe to inoculate once they'v cooled to room temperatures (72F).

If you have doubts about anything going into the PC stuff it into a jar you care nothing about and give it a run.

If it lives do a little dance.

If it melts throw out the jar...then do a little dance cause you don't have melted plastic inside your PC.

Never thought of that. I was lucky and the plastic melted to itself and the spawn bag. I'm going to order some sleeves today, and try to use the coveralls for now.

Thanks for the help greatly appreciated.

I don't see the point of this advice when you can just consult more experienced cultivators other than yourself by using the shroomery as a referencing tool and making a post about the subject in doubt, saving yourself the time of the trial and error of doing things that others have been there and done before you.

Painter's cover-alls tyvek'll work until you get some medical grade wrist sleeves.  Medical grade tyvek can be PC'ed repeatedly.  Painter's cover-all tyvek'll need to be replaced every other run through the PC.

So would these be considered medical grade?

After looking for "medical tyvek" I found these tyvek sterilization pouches:

Could these be to be used as filters on top of jars and withstand multiple sterilization cycles?

It's becoming expensive buying new tyvek envelopes every two cycles and reapplying silicone injection ports for my grain LC jars.

I too am a little confused on the "medical" tyvek sleeves, I can find many of them but none specify if they are medical grade.

I know RR has stated he has used them over and over for the last decade so if someone could confirm which ones are the right ones to be using it would be greatly appreciated.

I've posted this link before, but here it is again.  This is where I get tyvek wrist sleeves by the carton.  If you use these, you can run them through hundreds of pressure cooker cycles.

Great thank you very much, I will be ordering these asap.

Should I use two layers of this tyvek for filter lids like you recommend in your grain prep video?

Yes.  They're the exact item I used in the video.  I use them to this day in every filter patch bag during sterilization, whether grains or bulk substrate.

Hey RR i tried to order the same tyvek sleeve you mention, but they don't sell the same ones anymore, they sell instead maxshield tyvek sleeves, could they work?. Here is the link http://protective-clothing.net/tyvek-accessories/disposable-sleeves

This is the message they sent me when i tried to purchased the original ones:

"Thank you for your order – unfortunately we will be no longer selling the recycled tyvek sleeves ( I will have the IT Dept take them off the website).  I do have an alternative to the recycled tyvek called Maxshield.  It offers the same protection and looks the same, it’s just we manufacture it.  If you can take those, I can give them to you at the same cost.  Please advise…"
