  • 1943:  Bob "The Bear" Hite from Canned Heat is born

Quote:

Robert Ernest "Bob" Hite (February 26, 1943 – April 6, 1981) was the American lead singer of the blues-rock band, Canned Heat, from 1965 to his death in 1981. His nickname was "The Bear".

Biography

Hite was introduced to Alan Wilson by Henry Vestine and the two of them helped convince blues pianist Sunnyland Slim (1906-1995) to get back into the recording studio to record. In 1965, aged 22, Hite formed a band with Wilson. Vestine joined soon after and this trio formed the core of Canned Heat. The trio were eventually joined by Larry Taylor (bass) and Frank Cook (drums).

Canned Heat appeared on a November 1969 episode of Playboy After Dark. Hite was invited to talk with Hugh Hefner after the performance, along with other guests Sonny and Cher, Vic Damone, Dick Shawn and Larry Storch. A 20-year-old Lindsay Wagner, playing the part of one of Hefner's party guests, sat on Hite's lap and played a party game. When asked by Hefner what kind of animal Hite would be if he were an animal, Wagner claimed he'd be a bear. Hite told her she got it right, that people called him "The Bear." It was also on this episode that Hite informed Hugh Hefner that he had over 15,000 78s.

Hite performed with Canned Heat at Woodstock in August 1969. The performances were not included in the original (1970) film Woodstock, but are in the 1994 "Director's Cut" version.

He produced the John Lee Hooker/Canned Heat album, Hooker 'N Heat (1971).

Death

On April 5, 1981, during a break between sets at The Palomino Club in North Hollywood, Hite was handed a drug vial by a fan. Thinking it contained cocaine, Hite stuck a straw into the vial and snorted it. The drug turned out to be heroin and Hite turned blue and collapsed. Some roadies put Hite in the band's van and drove him to a nearby home where he died.

  • 1990:  Hunter S. Thompson arrested for LSD, marijuana, Valium, cocaine and explosives possession and sexual assault

Quote:

ASPEN, Colo. — Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson has been charged with sexually assaulting a female writer who was attempting to interview him.
Thompson, 52, surrendered to the district attorney's office Monday [02/26/1990] and was freed on $2,600 bail.
He is charged with sexual assault for allegedly grabbing the woman's breast and simple assault for allegedly punching her during an argument about whether the interview should take place in a hot tub.
Thompson, whose "gonzo" journalism is laced with drug references and wild hyperbole, said he is innocent and believes the woman wants publicity for her new venture, which he said is selling sexual aids and lingerie.
Officers from the district attorney's office said they searched Thompson's house on Monday and found a small quantity of suspected cocaine and marijuana.
The woman pressing the charges was identified as a 35-year-old self-employed woman from St. Clair, Mich., who said she attempted to interview Thompson on Feb. 21.
Thompson is the author of several books, including "Fear and Loathing On the Campaign Trail."

(Muncie Evening Press (Muncie, Indiana),  01 Mar 1990, Thu,  Page 27)

"But there were drugs--enough cocaine for a single snort, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Charles B. (Chip) McCrory. There were a few ounces of marijuana, 39 hits of LSD, and a small number of Valium-like sedatives for which Thompson had no prescription."

(The Los Angeles Times (Los Angeles, California)  23 Apr 1990, Mon Page 78)

ASPEN, Colo (AP) — Hunter S. Thompson, cleared on drug, explosives and sexual assault charges, celebrated with a glass of water, which he poured on his head. The "gonzo" journalist doused himself Thursday In an Aspen courtroom after a judge dismissed the charges at the request of prosecutors.

  • 1994:  Bill Hicks dies

Quote:

William Melvin "Bill" Hicks (December 16, 1961 – February 26, 1994) was an American stand-up comedian, satirist and musician. His humor challenged mainstream beliefs, aiming to "enlighten people to think for themselves."  Hicks used a ribald approach to express his material, describing himself as "Chomsky with dick jokes", while conceding that his humor was "caring".  His material largely consisted of general discussions about society, religion, politics, philosophy and personal issues. Hicks' material was often controversial and steeped in dark comedy. In both his stand-up performances and during interviews, he often criticized consumerism, superficiality, mediocrity and banality within the media and popular culture, describing them as oppressive tools of the ruling class, meant to "keep people stupid and apathetic."

Hicks died of pancreatic cancer in 1994 at the age of 32. In the years after his death, his work and legacy achieved the significant admiration and acclaim of numerous comedians, writers, actors and musicians alike. In 2007 he was voted the 6th greatest stand-up comic on the UK's Channel 4's 100 Greatest Stand-Ups and again in the updated 2010 list as the 4th greatest stand-up comic.

Cancer diagnosis and death

In April 1993, while touring in Australia, Hicks started complaining of pains in his side, and on June 16 of that year, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer that had spread to his liver.  He started receiving weekly chemotherapy, while still touring and also recording his album, Arizona Bay, with Kevin Booth. He was also working with comedian Fallon Woodland on a pilot episode of a new talk show, titled Counts of the Netherworld for Channel 4 at the time of his death. The budget and concept had been approved, and a pilot was filmed. The Counts of the Netherworld pilot was shown at the various Tenth Anniversary Tribute Night events around the world on February 26, 2004.

After being diagnosed with cancer, Hicks would often joke that any given performance would be his last. The public, however, was unaware of Hicks's condition. Only a few close friends and family members knew of his disease. Hicks performed the actual final show of his career at Caroline's in New York on January 6, 1994. He moved back to his parents' house in Little Rock, Arkansas, shortly thereafter. He called his friends to say goodbye, before he stopped speaking on February 14, and re-read J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring.  He spent time with his parents, playing them the music he loved and showing them documentaries about his interests. He died of cancer in the presence of his parents at 11:20 p.m. on February 26, 1994. He was 32 years old.  Hicks was buried in the family plot in Leakesville, Mississippi.

On February 7, 1994, Hicks authored a short prayer on his perspective, wishes and thanks of his life, to be released after his death as his "last word", ending with the words:
“ I left in love, in laughter, and in truth and wherever truth, love and laughter abide, I am there in spirit. ”

Who has seen the documentary? It was epic.
This was him on Howard Stern a year before his death.

In the last of his days, he would be gripping his side in pain as he told jokes.

Do you mean "It's Just A Ride", "Outlaw Comic" or "American"?  I assume you mean the latter.  Yes, it was epic and it is the best one.  I love it so much.

If you were born on the exact day that Bill Hicks died, you would now be legally able to drink a toast to him.  Cheers to Bill on the 21st anniversary of his death.
