I need some help to quit cigs.
    #14029230 - 02/26/11 08:09 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Now I've only been smoking for about a year, I often would stop smoking for weeks, even months and not feel any attachment to cigarettes. As of right now I haven't smoked one in three days, but the reason I've stopped this time isn't because I don't have a desire for them - it's because I've been noticing a big increase in my cigarette consumption these past two months, and in the morning before I start my day I feel like I really really want a cig. I'm positive I'm not addicted to cigarettes to the point where I would go drive to the store to buy a pack for 6.00, but I'm definitely at the point where if the opportunity to score one off one of my friends is presented to me I have a 2/10 chance of turning it down. I want to stop before I get to the stage where I'm addicted to cigarettes and wind up smoking them because I can't stop, they're really unhealthy and I don't want to throw my life away to a stupid 6.00 poison treatment. (no offense to any cig smokers, thats just my opinion on it)
So what I'm asking is for someone who's been in the stage I'm in and pulled through or anyone who has quit smoking successfully to give me advice on how to hold myself back from getting farther into a really bad habit.

That's pretty much how I feel minus the 20+ cigs a day part, when I know im faced with a lot of shit to do for the day I really really desire a cigarette, then one when I'm done doing all that stuff. I wish I never would've touched the damn things, or they could just legalize pot so I could carry arond a pack of joints for when I have a stressful day ahead of me.

Yeah, you're hooked. Quitting isn't easy, I know, but you can do it. The best way is just quit cold turkey. Get some hard candies or the like to help with the oral thing and try to keep busy and your mind occupied for the psychological part of it. Good luck! It's well worth it.

I'll take that advice, cold turkey is definitely what I want to do but I will definitely buy hard candies, I think I've heard of people doing that before but I didn't think of it. It'll help alot when I'm in the situation where I'm tweaking for a cig, I think I'll buy some halls or something with menthol in it so it gives me that strong taste too.

i wouldn't think that, OP, just because it may become true for you

i was smoking 1 black n mild a day, but ive stopped about 2 weeks ago.

i read somewhere that nicotine cravings are totally gone in about a month, so im just stopping for atleast 1.5 months and only going to bum cigarettes or cigars

it's not too hard.  Just don't think you have a horrible addiction-because you dont and it isnt too hard

how many cigs were you smoking a day?

here's what worked for me:

train yourself to hate ciggies.

learn to hate the smell
hate the taste
hate the fact that it hampers your physical performance
hate the fact that it drives away many women
hate that it shortens your lifespan

learn about the chemicals within it
learn how many carcinogens there are

in short, completely traumatize yourself.  then quit.

what worked for me was staying away from my smoking friends for a while. after some time your body becomes averse to the smoke and whatever other crap is in cigarettes. when you see them again you wont want anything to do with it.

I also tried to stay active and eat healthy when I quit, that way my body got in the behavior of wanting healthy things and not wanting that which would stifle the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle

I recently got an ecigarette which is tons lighter of a body load, and I can use it for social occasions when everyones smoking, and I might be tempted to grab one as well. My achilles heel was always vegas, but with this thing, I havent smoked a real cigarette even in vegas, and I dont plan to ever again.

What really helped me quit was starting to exercise. It took my mind off the cravings and kept me busy. After a stressful day at work instead of smoking a half pack I just went to the gym for a couple hrs.
