Very nice profile pic.
I gotta' ask. What's with each bag having it's own individual crate/case, as well as, what temps do you keep all those bags at while they're colonizing?

off of google, lol.

each bag is in its own crate during colonization and through the first flush. couple reasons.
first is allowing some air to get around the bag.
second is keeping the substrate depth where I'd like it, and kind of forming the block into more of a square vs a rectangle if left be. -the shape helps with more of a proper fitting on the shelves as well.
so I'd like to think it helps keep them cool, it keeps them spaced properly, it keeps things uniform, and it also helps keep the bag pushed close against the substrate to stop pins from forming there and growing on the first flush.
temperatures are room temp. nothing I ever do is incubated. LC, bags, monotubs, jars, pf, grain, whatever... it all is always at room temperature.
and yes, I have used many things from tool in my avatar and signature many times, most of their imagery.

I was just fuckin' w/ ya on the "google" brotha very nice. I like that idea. I was just thinking about it the other day. Controlling the way the grain colonizes, extremely innovative. Way to think "outside" the box ...

couple things:
those are not grain bags. inside the bags are a manure based substrate, 5 pounds of it. they were sterilized and then directly inoculated with LC. the black dots are the RTV inoculation ports. about 45cc in each bag.
the crates. well the clear crates I like best because they lock together and have holes on the bottom. used to be readily available at Wal-Mart and also at certain dollar stores. however, I can't find them for sale anywhere anymore. so... on to the black ones. they're basically the same size, but don't lock together (no big deal) and the bottoms are solid (kind of a bummer, but whatever, they'll work). they can be found at dollar tree. best bet is to order black ones on line and go pick up at store when they are delivered. http://www.dollartree.com/cleaning-storage-hardware/storage/Mini-Black-Crates/212c261c261p150495/index.pro
over 9000. lol. I used to play WoW for years, quit it cold turkey though, it was fucking my life up.
amount. this is just part of one room. I wonder what happens when you inoculate a ton and a half of substrate all at the same time? guess we're gonna find out.

Oh snap, straight from LC to sterilized substrate
i likes that idea

That is how I do my reishi's.......
I only use 30 cc's though, and a different recipe obviously.

Edited to add some pix!

i've always done grains then spawn to manure/coir whatever...im loving the idea of completely skipping the grain
especially since working with agar and knowing im using a clean culture to start LC's

Yea but you still want to test the LC's and going right to the bag is a lot different. I would recommend integrating the technique in on the side in smaller batches until you get a feel for it. Once you know what your doing with them..... Then Unleash them Muth@#$%^ahz!!!

oh yeah i always make a pf style cake to test, once fully colonized i crumble it and throw it outside to my dedicated 'area' next to my garden :-P

or you can just pick up a microscope to test the lc.
screw spawning, it takes too long.
inoculation to appearance of full colonization (block is all white) = 7 days first sign of pins = 28 days from inoculation
if I first colonized spawn, then spawned it to pasteurized substrate, and then colonized that... bah, no way... that would ruin the time table man.
a couple strains work well. I pretty much exclusively use the regular PE. but I've pulled it off with others such as EQ before:

I flip 30 sixty-four quart PE mono's every 30 days like clock work.
Bags are good I do that sometimes too.
Using grains is fine you just have to time your initial batch right and know when to get the next one going so your grow doesn't lag. I admit it is tricky because of having to further expand to grain from there but like I said timing is everything.
LC = 1,0000 easier though, hands down.
I actually push the PE out of here pretty quick and that is exactly why I grow the strain, Its fast as shit! ... and ready for tossing after the 3rd flush.
That is about 5 weeks from day 1 by then I my next 30 spawn bags are ready. ..... Timing is everything though.
Sometimes I just use a wire though and don't bother spawning, I just split the 64 quart recipe into 4 spawn bags which is ~6 lbs a piece anyway and split each bag of grain spawn between 6 pasteurized bags. Then I just toss them and wire them closed again. They colonize like lightening with 1.2 quarts of spawn in each. Then I just cut the tops and put 4 in each mono,
Again we are back to 30 monos.
Seriously good call on the microscope though bro

Hi monstermitch. Great idea using a scope instead of spawning the LC to test substrates to test viability.
Would you care or be able to describe to the best of your ability what a healthy LC looks like under the scope? Also, what is the name brand, source, and specs of the micro-scope you use to see if your LC's are viable?
