Hard drive magnets come stuck to these metal plates. How the hell do you detach them? I've tried lots of stuff and the coating on the mag is beginning to chip away. Easy fix to this?

i had to do it caveman style... Used a mallet and a really thin flathead screwdriver , placed the magnet tray against a wall or something and chizzled that bitch till it started popping up. Or you could buy neodymium (rare earth magnets) which is the same thing as the magnet your trying to pry out

i dont see how u could do it with a chisel i tried that the other day and i couldn't get it between the magnet and the metal plate i figured if i bent it away from the magnet even if their was a glue or something it would just come right off
btw isnt this a more of a DIY thing

you just need the right angle and a small enough flathead. most importantly a wall or something to hold it still while you chisel

Hey,
I just glued the plate to my fan....seems to work.
I still need to make an enclosure and mount it permanently.
I have many of the neodymium magnets and dead computers to work with if it doesn't work when mounted.
Take care,
JD

Exacto knife...best way. Otherwise use a flathead and some pliers
Try not to chip the coating, it might bubble up where it was glued but that's fine.

Check this site. It works for me.
http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-separate-the-Magnets-from-an-old-harddisk/
Just need two pair of pliers/channel locks/vice grips.

Hey,
Thanks for taking the time.
While I did get a plate working by just gluing the plate to my fan, I did find out, via that site, about a crazy aspect of the plate+magnet assemblies.
...they are magnetic (or appear that way) from one side. The plate is a magnetic shield. It makes perfect sense that one is necessary, but that this was possible seemed incredible. Monopoles do not exist. Never.
The fact is that these plates does not block fields so much as they bend them.
