Pressure cook single-use petri dishes? Probably a bad idea...

This is probably a stupid question, but I haven't been able to figure it out:
I bought a bag of disposable (sterile) petri dishes. The bag was ripped, so no sterile content for sure, so I thought, maybe one can pressure cook those thingies. I had already poured my agar agar/malt extract medium inside and was standing with the stacks in front of my pressure cooker, when it occured to me, that there might be a high probability of the thin plastic melting in the process...I now have 10 petri dishes with homemade agar and don't know what to do with them...ha ha ha! Probably not a good idea to sterilize them in a pressure cooker, right?

disposable petri dishes made out of PP [Polypropylene] (says on the bottom on most) are pressure cookable. So yes most likely you can re use them.

mhm...I feel like I haven't been careful enough with them while pouring the agar in since I had in mind PC them afterwards...

Darn! It doesn't say anything. I only know they're the coloured petri dishes from a company called Sterilin but I can't find any info neither on them nor on their web site...
I probably end up innoculating them and maybe I can isolate some parts before the penicillin takes over the dish. It seems cambodian mycelium is pretty strong. Let's see if that works!
Thanx guys!

Ok virus, I'll give it a try. Thanx for your quick help (as usual) bro!
Edit: Nope, that didn't work. I just PC'd one dish and now it's just a lump of plastic...But hey, I had to try to be sure, right?

I use tiny little jars from the chinese market (many times they are expired products so they give me the jars for free!). Baby food jars work well too. THey are reusable countless times and the best part is you can put your agar directly in them, screw the lid down and cook it that way. No pouring and no mess and no need for parafilm.

Interesting tek mycocozm! But isn't it a little tricky to work with them, especially when getting the mycelium pieces out etc?

Not really tricky, just look for the shallowest jar you can find with the widest mouth. The only drawbacks are that you can't see a bird's eye view of your culture, only side view, and they take up about twice the space of petri dishes.

Disposable petri dishes are not autoclavable. In addition, you don't put agar in the dishes to sterilize. You sterilize the agar in a bottle, and then pour it later. RR

Thanx for your input RR! Always appreciated! I came across a tek on this german website

that mentioned sterilization of the petri dishes after pouring in the medium. But I've come to realize it makes more sense to do it as you say it. In my specific case, however, I didn't have sterilized dishes and the medium was already inside the dishes, so I just had to find an alternative. Now I've put some healthy mycelium into my unsterilized dishes and will see what happens - just out of curiosity.

even if the packs were opened somehow, as long as the petri's where still together with tops on there is a chance they were still sterile.

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping too! I didn't take any sterile precautions and didn't cook the agar long enough to sterilize it though (keep in mind I was planning to PC the dishes after pouring), so the whole experiment might just yield pure mold. I just couldn't get myself to throw away those beautiful dishes with the home made agar...
Will report what came out. I've been pretty lucky with contams so far.
Thanx guys!

Disposable petris are not made of polypropylene. They are polycarbonate, and not PCable. If the dishes were reusable, they wouldn't be disposable.

lol mine re use just fine man and ARE made of Polypropylene. and Can be Pressure cooked. Perhaps my sentencing was wrong but i did buy them as "disposables" even though they can clearly be re-used. and am doing so.

PP petri dishes are expensive and cloudy to the point you can't see the cultures inside.
Plastic polystyrene petri dishes are not autoclavable, but they're as clear as glass so you can see through them. I want my petri dishes to be crystal clear so I can see what's growing inside. RR

i've pc'd the disposable ones and they warped enough that they were not usable. don't remember exactly which ones. whatever lana was selling years ago.

man I bought some PP petri dishes from grainger, they were unbelievably cheaper than other PP petris ive seen. They came and I was shocked at how crystal clear they were. Then I tried to PC them and they all melted lol....Guess they must have either lied about them being PP or they are some kind of shitty hybrid plastic or something. You get what you pay for I guess, . It didnt specifically say they were autoclaveable but I figured hey its PP must be ok right....
Anyway, i stick to baby bottle jars. I PC a ton of them in a spawn bag next to my agar. Pour the bottles and put 2 in a ziplock baggie in front of the flowhood. Crystal clear dishes, easy wrap up (fuck some parafilm), reusable, cheap, plus I had a million baby bottlel already, oh and it works great so thats what I do.

I will have to see RR. I bought a set of PP 80 mm dishes to try.
I try everything I guess.
I have not used them yet, as I am just finishing my second cyanmar order.
I will see. They will be good for emergency agar moments anyway.
