The same goes for disturbing videos - once you decide you saw enough, you discover you saw too many.

People always doubt that something horrific could happen, but all the signs are saying that this "recovery" is really just Act II of the depression. Act III is on the horizon, and even if it's not a full-blown collapse, it's going to be pretty fucking bad.

I mean, China's already selling off its dollars and once no one wants to buy our debt anymore, the only thing the government can do is borrow more money from the Fed, and then the shit's going to hit the fan.

Pris, I've read the constitution plenty of times. What I don't understand is how it's legal to create a semi-public branch of government and give it powers that belonged to Congress without an amendment to the constitution.

We've done nothing to change what started the recession in the first place, and everything we've done has made the problem even worse.

By the way, global demand isn't responsible for the commodities prices soaring. Every commodity is currently traded with US dollars, but since our money supply is inflating faster than before, the prices are going up.

Also, some commodities (like food) have been deeply affected by the earthquakes all over and other natural disasters.

I posted this graph in another thread, but heres a nice place for it.  See how all that money being printed is sitting on banks balance sheets?  Well, that money is noninflationary until it begins circulation.  ANd since its just sitting there, in a bank, its not being circulated, and therefore an increased money supply is NOT out chasing a stagnant supply of goods, and as a result, our inflation rate is not horrible.

Guess who is competing with us to buy things now?  China and India.  Notably, OIL.  Guess what happens when lots of new customers want an amount of a good that hasn't kept pace with the new demand?  Demand > Supply ----> Price Increases.

This is the graph that scares you:  the monetary base.  But look, the big jump in teh base is matched by that big jump in the graph above.  Whatever does it mean?!?!?!?!

What's gonna happen with that money?

I don't think creating a trillion, not circulating it and then making it disappear without it having touched anything at all is the lulz they have in mind.

Either it'll get lent out, SLOWLY, as banks begin accepting loan applications again (think they can lend out 1.2T to quality projects in a short amount of time, i doubt it).

OR, they lend it out faster than the FEd would like, and they adjust monetary policy accordingly to suck that excess liquiditiy back up (worst case scenario:  up up up up up go the reserve requirements)

Ahh OK, so it's gonna get circulated. Thank you, I wanted to know that *hugs his pet silver Maple*

So the trillion will only generate inflation if it enters circulation BUT they are going to circulate $ 1,000,000,000,000 reeeeally carefully to not upset the balance.

That's the point, Meams. In order to get out of the crisis, money needs to start shifting pretty fast, which WILL hyperinflate the market with all that extra money the banks have to use as reserves.

And maybe they should raise the reserve requirement so inflation doesn't get out of hand once that money starts shifting.

It might get circulated.  It'll be circulated to the extent that the Fed thinks is reasonable for our growth prospects, our inflationary trends, and other regional and national economic indicators.

Duhhhhh.

Well it doesn't do anyone any good if it just sits in their accounts without creating loans on top of it.

Why does everyone here always assume all that money is going to be dumped into the market quickly?

You realize banks make loans when they deem a loan application to be (a)a sunk cost project that can be paid back, or (b)a good enough running investment that they can make money on the loan [ie starting a business].

So, lets make it simple and say banks make home improvement loans and business startup (or business improvement) loans.  DO you think there are magically going to be 1,000,000,000,000 worth of projects in both categories all of a sudden?  If so, do you think they'll all be able to be paid back and/or made money off of?

OF COURSE NOT.  And as a result, the banks will not be making all those loans, and as a result, the money won't be DUMPED on the economy.

Now, lets assume that those loans CAN be paid back.  Guess waht, that means the economy must be doing pretty good if all these loans make sense for the banks.  And guess what, if the economy is doing good, the Fed doesn't reallly have the need for all that excess liquidty, and will SOAK IT UP ACCORDINGly.

Basically those two graphs together show how meams's hero took a bunch of taxpayer's money and gave it directly to the banks so that they could keep it in their FED accounts and make interest on it turning bank reserves into giant savings accounts.

Well many of us are extremely skeptical the Fed will do a good job at that. A trillion dollars is still $40K per adult American. I dont think they can do it in a way that will not cut into every American's net worth with a blunt axe.
