Scots woodchips/yard mulch
    #14025330 - 02/25/11 12:48 PM (13 years, 7 days ago)

Just opened my bag to use as secondary spawn, and it has mycellium already on it. It smells distinctly mushroomy. What are my options? Should I just toss the bag and get a new one? Has tis happened to anyone before?.....

I was hoping theres a chance when I came into contact with it all the spores on my clothing landed on it but that doesn't seem too likely....

Sterilize and use.

Damn 40 pounds of chips would require ALOT of PC loads. Also I read the mycellium only really thrives when it comes into contact with raw unsterilized chips. (after already having started alot of fully colonized primary spawwn)

That is a lot. I don't think that sterilization would hurt the introduced mycelium, in cultivation of edible mushrooms sawdust and woodchip substrates are always sterilized. I guess that it's easier for contaminate mushrooms to attack sterilised woodchips.
You may try soaking them in bleach water, but I'm not familiar with the exact procedure, search it.

You could go ahead and try anyways. Woodlovers MYC is agressive so it will probably work to a degree anyways. Start with a good solid, fat chunk of healthy spawn. Boiling would be good if it makes it possible in comparison to a PC.

Not sure what you mean by it's agressive anyway. Are you saying just add spawn to the chips that have a foreign mycellium on it and it will over run it? Idk what i'm doing wrong my woodlovers take FOREVER to colonize and it was healthy aggressive chips i started with. is 70 degrees too high for them? should I move them outside to the low 50's?

stamets recommends 60-70 for woodlovers IIRC. as for the chemical additions, I have had some bad experience with using it... tried a couple "woodlover smoothie" teks and nothing came from them. too much chemical was probably my bad.

me being the curious soul that I am, I would toss down the already colonized chips and let them eventually fruit just to see what they are. then get some new chips for my intended culture
