They've always been fucking weird. That's what happens when drinking sake, playing with swords, and doing deeply questionable sexual acts are national pastimes for centuries

Fuck you guys, japan is awesome. Sure if you just pick what art you want to represent japan, you can make it look bad. What about they army of clay men they found? That was china, but still.

It's not that japan's art at that time was bad, it was just dramatically different from what the west was doing. IMO thats what makes it funny. Plus the pic they chose. Theres definitely something funny about it in that context

Those types of paintings are very cool. Sometimes I wish that I was more artistically inclined - I can't paint or draw for shit.

Yeah, well, but while here in the West artists were busy mixing rapeseed oil and mud, the Japanese had other things on their minds:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_bondage

Heck, I see why the Japanese couldn't be bothered with old-fashioned Western 2D if they had the opportunity to play with 3D full-experience media :awesome:

It's all about priorities.

there's nothing wrong with bondage and its a form of expression through exhibition, they are submitting to fulfill a psychological need, it's on the same level using drugs, or scoring a touchdown in a football game.

There certainly isn't anything wrong with bondage  But in addition to fulfilling a psychological or sexual need, which is the level most BDSM people are at. But I think it can be regarded as an art form in those cases where the aesthetic component surpasses the hedonistic aspects. I regard it as more akin to other forms of body modification (tattoos, piercings, branding, scarring, etc. etc.), but relatively noninvasive and temporal.

You mean temporary? Cause temporal just means "having to do with time".

There's art in everything...doesn't stop me from getting creeped the fuck out by some things, though.

But I'm not enlightened, and even though I'm Zen, I don't ever expect to be...
