SoCal - possible Ganoderma?
    #14022983 - 02/24/11 10:41 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I found two clusters of this while hiking today in some chaparral in San Diego county. The first were quite tiny(about the size of a penny) and were almost overlooked while the second was a log(which I yoinked for further study) that had some larger mushrooms on it.

My first impression was that the coloration looked identical to some reishi mushrooms that I had grown from a kit about a year prior with the most major differences being that this grows without a stalk and is a bit thinner. Couldn't find anything like it in any field guide or online source for the Southern California area so I'm kind of at a loss for how to go from here and identify it? Any suggestions for what it might be or some better sources to check?

Trying to figure out more but so far:

Spore print- brown
No detectable odor from individual mushrooms.
Color bands from brown in center to rusty red/orange to yellow to white at edges on top. Bands of white and brown on bottom.
No stalk
No gills
Found in San Diego chaparral on log and at base of woody bush.

Underside of single mushroom. Is brighter white and brown bands than photo may show.

Looks like a Stereum, or a Trametes, maybe. Clear pics would help.

Does it have pores?

It is certainly not Ganoderma sp.

Clearer pics unfortunately will have to wait until tomorrow, when sunlight allows for better pictures to be taken.

Grateful for the suggestions to look up. Knew it was too convenient and a bit conspicuous to be what I thought it looked like. A shame that it's nothing worth cultivating but I guess I should expect that in SoCal.

If the second photo is the underside, then I imagine it to be Stereum sp.

Clear photos in natural lighting is ideal, so you are right in waiting until tomorrow.

Good luck, happy hunting, and welcome to The Shroomery!

Are you sure the spore print was brown? I'm struggling to find anything similar that doesn't have white spores. :frown:

I thought at first it might be Gloeophyllum sepiarium but that's a total guess. It seems to be growing in a different pattern to pictures I'm finding, so most likely not.

Probably a Stereum species, like TS said.

Phellinus is possible, but I don't think so. It certainly isn't Gloeophyllum sp.

What type of tree was this growing on? Hardwood? Conifer?

How 'tough' are they? Are they 'corky'? Again, do they have pores? You may need a hand lens to be sure.

You're right, the spores are white. I don't know why I thought they were brown except that I was tired as all heck and so many of them were covered in dirt. There's definitely a sprinkling of white spores in the bottom of the black garbage bag that the stump is sitting in.

It's good to know at least that that kind of coloring is common. The thing about living in a desert is that when it does rain seeing anything that looks mushroomy is enough to get you excited. I'll probably have a heart attack if I manage to move or visit some of the forested areas up north.

Hymenochaete might be worth checking out
