The News
    #14008843 - 02/22/11 05:41 PM (13 years, 10 days ago)

Why is it that I have to see depressing news all day about people killing each other and see images of suffering people? I rarely even watch it, but every time I do it's all this sick twisted shit.

Why are people so obsessed with hearing this?

It's getting old, eh?

I used to read/watch the news every day to keep up with things. Now I check in once a month and each time it's the same shit still going on.

I haven't watched regular commercial TV in many years.  Try it.

Like with this earthquake...why do I have to see bloody people crying and unconscious or dead bodies pulled from rubble?

And to be honest...a part of me thinks "That's what you get for not being humble to the ways of Nature and being too comfortable with modernity." Though that is too easy to say. I guess ultimately you can't blame the citizens. But if the power is out of your hands what are you to do?

Why do we have to even know of all these deaths anyway? Ignorance is bliss in so many other cases. Oh yeah, ratings...

Well, if you are referring to recent events in africa and the middle east like what's going on in iran, libya, bahrain, etc it's because it's real and it's happening. However if you are referring to regular domestic news, it's because pain sells.

Why do you think it's called a news STORY? it's just a narrative that people want to hear

Not to mention all the bullshit. Did anyone see that hit piece that aired last night? It was like watching a fucking episode of TMZ.

people dying is really important news, especially when its thousands of people all at the same time, with unjust reasoning. if we focused on the babies that were born, who would know anything about genocide, or the squashing of rights in the middle east?

i mean we could certainly use a pick me up once in a while, but i dont want to lose focus on the people monitoring my phone conversations, and the people that kill journalists who report the truth

edit: id also rather hear about death and corrupt politics, over paris hilton and brad pitt any day of the week hands down. we dont spend enough news time on important issues

I think you are misunderstanding the point. The point isn't that "bad" news is being presented, it's that "bad" news is misrepresented (in other words it's being presented as if there is way more violence than there actually is). If you look at crime report statistics compared to newspaper reports, the newspapers make it look like there is a lot more crime going on than there actually is, and so people think the world is a lot more dangerous than it actually is.

Reminding us why we need police protection, in case we get any other ideas?

I am so glad no one has quoted Tool in this thread.

I see that as the fault of the ignorant viewer rather than the news.  Unless the news flat out lies, its the viewer that misunderstands the statistics.

So it's the fault of the viewer to want to trust the news, even though newspapers deliberately run the same stories multiple times over and over and over in order to make it appear liek there's more crime?

News makes crime appear rampant
Public complains to public officials to get "tough on (nonexistent) crime"
Public officials pass useless laws that put more people in prison
Repeat

that is the fault of the viewer? How about the news companies stop misrepresenting the facts?

Not fair. The news purposely skews shit all the time. Watch the news bash anyone with a government that is not democratic. Go protest and say that the government needs total reform and get arrested. Watch the news cal you an anarchist or terrorist because your political views differ. Pure propaganda.

Exactly, Diecommie what you said amounts to this "It's the fault of the person being lied to, to recognize that they're being lied to, not the fault of the lier to stop lying"

You can misunderstand statistics a lot when none are shown and specific wording is used with intent of supporting a specific side of the topic.
