75X? 1

I was looking at the 75X stereoclave, and noticed the huge amp draw. How much more economical would it be to buy one of these over an electric stove and a pressure cooker?

an internal heating element will be more effective the external from a stove. you may be able wrap that bitch in insulation too.

propane is the best way to drive a PC IMHO, electric takes forever to develop a full head of steam and forever to make pressure. I have an x25 electric and It could take 5 hours to make for 1:45 @ 15psi

Wow that's a very long time for your 25X to heat up.
My 75X only takes 25-30min to get up to 20psi, provided I turn on the heat to get it steaming first while I pack and load filter patch bags.
I highly suggest getting a 75X.

75X rocks. The 15 amp draw is only when the heating element is on. Once it's up to pressure, the thermostat cycles the element and it hardly draws any power. I fill mine with hot water and as said above, let it preheat during loading. They're usually spitting steam five to ten minutes after putting the lid on, and they're up to 20 psi half an hour later if fully loaded. RR

Cool thanks for your responses. Any objections to running these things half full, or would it be better to just use the stove top pc?

Running them not full with pre-sealable bags usually results in burst bags I learned that the hard way.

I'm not going to preseal any bags. I'm using the tyvek sleeves and zip ties.

mine is from 81 and was used when I got it, it as my first pc and I need to revamp it, Thermostat cycles through 6 psi, unacceptable, so I just use it with flame, dreaming of a better day, those look like really nice units RR, I wanna B Like U someday

I am in the UK so I bought an 18L stainless electric PC with no thermostat -it lets off steam every few mins to regulate the pressure. So I built a simple power regulator for it. You could probably do the same for about $10. When it comes up to pressure turn down the power and you can pretty much forget it. From an earlier post, details:
Quote:
To get round this I built a 2kw "dimmer" for the element using about £10 of electronics from Maplin and a salvaged heatsink. Design courtesy of the distillers who need to do this sort of thing. I built the TRIAC/DIAC/Pot one halfway down this page - Use a 1M OHM pot for UK though as that is for 120V Or there is a summary of options here see TRIAC controllers and Phase Angle control.
First test gives a fantastic steady pressure, making this PC a really excellent piece of kit.

Is it possible to use the 75x to do quart jars and bags at the same time?

Sure just use the canning rack between the jar and bag levels.
