Saran wrap over casing layer
    #14020762 - 02/24/11 04:03 PM (13 years, 8 days ago)

Has anyone tried putting saran wrap over the casing layer until pinning starts?

It seems like mushrooms love to pin on the sides because the humidity is high - kind of what I'm basing this idea on. I know it kills FAE, but maybe if you misted and fanned a few days, then added the wrap, then removed it after the pins started to show?

Side pinning is often the sign of low RH in your FC. If your RH is high and if you provide plenty of FAE, you don't need to do this to achieve great results.

Why not just go with tried and true wax paper? It allows some evaporation, unlike clingfilm, and still keeps very high humidity. Evaporation is the primary pinning trigger, I doubt it would even pin with clingfilm over the surface.

It would give it longer to consolidate tho... which might be beneficial? As long as you removed the film cover eventually... It also seems like it would give contams a chance to get hold of the casing...

I didn't know wax paper was tried and true. I kind of thought I made this idea up. I almost forgot wax paper existed.
