Not hard, but (depending on the church), thats definitely not all they do.
For deeply religious people, the Church is the center of social activities. My grandma takes part in Church activities and is out at little dinners, gatherings, food deliveries, sing-a-longs, whatever 2-3 days a week. Multiply that by a hundred members or so and it's a lot of planning, volunteer or not.
Ask anyone who owns a small business what it's like to manange even 5-10 employees. It's definitely hard work. I'm not saying I agree with it, but like others have said, managing a church is a business.

Property tax?
tax exempt, let's say the congregation is 100 people, if they each made $200/week and tithed the 10% the church claims, $20 per person, that would give a church $8000/mo on a single monitary sacrifice each week, I find it difficult to believe a church would have an $8000 per month overhead
now if you want the real figures, most average churches pull around $40k a day, the mega churches (I had a friend that was an associate pastor at one) can pull more than $300k on a single offering
yeah... tax the fucking churches

when you talk about megachurches bringing in hundreds of thousands of dollars per day, do you mean at a single building or the whole congregation? that seems like a lot even for st. peter's.

You hit that nail right on the fucking head. He's not exaggerating the numbers, we had entrepreneurs at church who would give thousands a month. It was a below average sized church, too. The church's checking account had over a mil in it, and since my dad wasn't the type to spend it on hookers and drugs, the only thing they use it for is a bigger place in a nicer area, demographics are always taken into consideration. It's a cash-cow business and it should be taxed like one.

Most churches I've been to, only bring in, what, 50 people or so? That's only probably $1,000 per day for them. Max. But even if it's $1, tax their ass. It isn't fair that some religions get tax exemption and other religions, which are based on psychedelic drug use, get jail time.

I assume tax exemption was originally to defend the separation of church and state, and to defend religions in particular from being taxed into oblivion?
So, yeah, well, we fucked up on that part. So we might as well tax them. Just make sure there's a law somewhere that says all religions are taxed on an equal scale. The big ones wont even be slowed down, I mean fuck they're blowing how much money flying pasty white Americans to Zimbabstarvee-e' and Honderpas??? To build churches and spread bibles?

I always assumed that religious tax exemption was instituted in order to encourage people to make more churches, so that that more people can be kept under control. No offense to those of you who believe.

Actually, the church isnt that rich.
The reported income and expense in 2006 of the vatican was 310 / 307 million making a 3 million dollars US surplus.
The Vatican has also been in a deficit for many years due to mismanagement of the Cardinals.
Now i'm am sure they are hiding BILLIONS! But... There budget is now around 300 mil...
Yes we should tax them, to make them go under and disappear...
PS, the value of Vatican palace is about 1.2 billion
