Quick WBS question. TY!

I soaked my WBS for 24 hours then put it to drain over a window screen, I got tied up for 72 hours and couldn't go on with the process. The WBS is dry on the outside bit did keep it's moisture on the inside but now it smells fermented.
Is this WBS still feesable? It doesn't smell full blown but it is smelly. Could I still pc it and knock it up? Or make a new batch!
Thanks!

u should be cool just go ahead and boil till they are well hydrated and proceed as normal just try not to let it sit so long in the future. they can start sprouting/molding very quickly

I would just put it all back in a bucket, then boil some water dump the water into the bucket of seed lay lid over top wait 20-30 min then redrain for 45-60 min load it up and pc. Should be good to go

Well, it would probably be ok, but since WBS is so cheap, why risk it? Personally, I would toss it if it stinks and count it as a learned lesson.
good luck

< your soaked and laying around WBS is not a good thing. If you soak and herp derp for 72 hours at room temperature, it's best to toss it.
Hell, I just tossed half a dozen quart jars because I soaked and left the jars in the fridge for a month. They were sprouting all kinds of shit and growing mold of all shapes and sizes. PC'ed the jars then tossed the bad seed.
Key here is if it stinks, it's bad. Soaking not only hydrates the grains but also encourages endospores to germinate which get nuked during the PC run. If there's no PC run, guess what happens.

on another note, your original rinse, and soak water should be as hot as your faucet will get..thus making it so the grains can not sprout...

The 24 hr soak is pointless, I've been growing for years now and never soak at all, and never have bacteria or mold problems. The real key to success is in hydrating the grain adequately but not excessively, and drying the exterior before loading into jars/bags.

Completely agree. I think it's easier with a soak, but if you can do it without, then go for it. You want the grains fully hydrated on the interior, and basically dry on the surface.
(I use RR's grain tek for WBS, if anybody cares.)

I thought the whole idea was to let it ferment while it soaks so that the fucked up bacteria is activated and easier to get rid of? But yea 72 hours is beyond pushing so nvm.

I've never under stood this. If the pressure cook kills everything, why does it matter what was growing in substrate BEFORE the cook?

because it can grow after you pressure cook it. by soaking it your forcing it to germinate and shit. by the time you boil it and it expands theres no chance of bacterial contamination. Mold yes but bacteria not really.
someone correct me if im wrong though.

to clarify: bacteria can survive being PC'd.

Trust years of experience, the soak is completely unnecessary. Just follow the advice I gave. Hydrate grains, and dry exterior before loading. PC @ 15psi for 90-120 minutes. Enjoy!

It's rarely 100.000% effective. There's usually something hanging around left over.

haha, i have never had problems without soaking either. the only reason i do it is the grains hydrate quiker when i boil them.Quote:

ummmm no it cant. im a bio/chem major and have never heard this. bacteria cant but toxins caused by bacteria can.
