Which series is the one where they explain why all the alien races look similar? (it was some kind of annunaki-type genesis story)

Yeah it's TNG. I think it is season 7 as well, definitely one of the very late episodes.

I've only seen the new Star Trek movie, First Contact (which is my fav), and Wrath of Khan
I've only seen the first episode of TNG, so I'm really excited to get into it.

fair warning, after watching the first season and half of the second season you might be a bit disenchanted but some of the horrendously sucky episodes. Which is the majority of all of the first season imo. It gets really fucking good starting the 3rd season like...holy fucking shit good.

That's what I've heard.
Someone told me that it was a result of the new cast settling into their roles, etc.
I'm okay with a little campyness, the storyline itself is interesting enough.

that and some writing problems. Star trek as a whole got alot better when gene roddenbury had less control(dont flame me!)

Haha yeah, the first couple of seasons were really clunky. In my opinion though, some of the stories in the earlier episodes were better than the later episodes which seemed to rely too much on techno-talk.
I think it was the same pattern with DS9 and VOY, Took at least 3 seasons to find their feet and get going.
And! I'm pretty sure I'm going to be on my own on this but I thought the recent Star Trek film was terrible. It was like Saved By The Bell in space. A couple of good actors tho.

i liked it.
I think they may be able to justify it's "saved by the bell" appearance by saying they are trying to capture a new generation of star trek fans. Then next movie will be telling - whether or not the characters mature (I'm just saying this as a cinephile, not a trekkie).

I just watched the first 2 episodes (its really 1 long one) of TNG and it was pretty cool.
If this is the "bad" part of the series then I'm pretty optimistic about the rest

The bad episodes are the ones that focus on menial dumb soap opera shit like troi's mom or something - well just about any episode that hoe is in You can tell when they're running short on ideas
that said all of the sick time travel, Q episodes, and generally awesome ideas they come up with more than outweigh any negatives.

Q probably was/is one of the best sci-fi characters ever. John de Lancie did a really good job of portraying him.
I preferred Q in the earlier episodes when there was a bit more mystery about him/the Q continuum. Same with the Borg - when they first appeared they were scary as hell. Voyager milked the Borg a bit too much...but 7 of 9 was also a great character too.
