Salary of a Church Pastor

My room mate is a really cool guy and I've known him for 10 years. He happens to be Catholic, and I tolerate it even though I really dislike most the philosophy behind it. Out of curiosity I was curious what these pastors get paid. The average pastor makes $85,000 (http://www1.salary.com/Pastor-salary.html).. doesn't this seem a little high? I realize people think these people are doing great work, but it really doesn't seem Christian at all. Why aren't Christians able to gather somewhere and worship for free? Doesn't this undermine some sort of ethics of the entire thing, especially since religion pays no taxes? You think about all the charity churces ask for, just remember the first 85k are going to the pastor, nevermind the other 'employees' your donation may go towards. Again I don't mean to sound hateful but come on...

Well, if you think about it, they are leading an organization. Even small churches are probably a few hundred people. Organizing those people into some type of coordinated effort (whatever that may be) is a full time thing.
Anyone who's managed people knows how challenging that can be.

Old news to me. Most Churches have always been about the money/power/control they can extract from their followers. That's why in most religions sin is inescapable... they get you for life.
Recommend reading the Satanic Bible by Anton LaVey (not a satanist, but definitely a good philosophy and thought provoking read.), The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins, watch Zeitgeist, comedy by Bill Hicks/George Carlin etc.

Most churches run on committees on volunteers do they not? Also how hard is it to organize highly motivated people to show up on Sunday or for events?

Not hard at all, especially when you tell people that they will suffer for eternity if they don't show up.

They get paid based in part on contributions by members. (not just Catholics, it's pretty common.)

I grew up Catholic. I remember as a kid they'd only pass the collection basket once.
Just recently i went to church with my family and now they're passing the collection basket TWICE in one mass!

And they have multiple masses a day! Fuck that bullshit.

I can't speak for Catholic churches, but the Evangelical church my dad pastored was relatively small (60-100 people), but it still had a political hierarchy and people at various levels were compensated for their time.
In addition to their salaries, most preachers are given a parsonage; a free house to live in courtesy of the church. I grew my first shrooms in a parsonage. Then, when my dad was a year and a half from retirement and a pension, they kicked him out with bullshit accusations so they wouldn't take the financial loss (parsonages become property of the pastor upon retirement).
Anybody who thinks that churches aren't strictly businesses have no idea how they work.

I don't care what they get paid, but churches should be taxed.

Personally I dont think anyone should be taxed. Taxes are the devil.
The only hussle I can think of that is better than owning a church is owning a casino.

I always thought it was weird how they preach not to worship false idols, then my roman catholic church spent $5mil on remodeling and buying the biggest, most horrific cross with jesus impaled upon it imaginable. Money well spent in the eyes of god, surely...

If I wouldn't be disowned by my family I might have already tried it. The thing is, you don't have to memorize the Bible. Just select key passages that support whatever emotion you want to sell to your congregation. Hell make up your own Bible if you want, it's worked countless times.
Remember, these aren't smart people who are going to call you out on your shit, they're dumb people who want a charismatic leader to make them feel good about their lives and convince them that they're right. Scare them away from doubt and then softly remind them that it takes donations to keep the work of god happening every Sunday.
Then, when you're wealthy and corrupt, shoot yourself in the fucking head for misleading and robbing everyone for you own benefit, and for spreading ignorance and fear.
