Hey all- Mushroom cultivator and brewer
    #13997446 - 02/20/11 07:29 PM (13 years, 13 days ago)

Hey everyone-

Just wanted to say howdy. I am new to mushroom growing and am trying my hand at two shiitake strains, and two oyster strains..  I got into mushrooms because of homebrewing.. I have been all grain brewing for 15 years and have a 4 tap kegerator I installed a couple years ago.. I started culturing yeast for use in my homebrews and that got me into my interest in mushrooms.. I also am an avid sourdough baker.. guess I am a certified fungophile.. Anyway, just wanted to say hello to everyone!

Thanks for the welcome. I am  also a competition dutch oven cook so I make all my breads in my dutch oven, but I use a variation of this recipe from Mother Earth news for the No Knead Crusty Bread and replace part of the flour with sour dough starter.. This is the best bread I have ever had and its so simple to make it should be a crime.. The starter I have had for several years and it came from a much older starter.

Right on Thanks Groos. My dad is making bread right now, and its a lot better than anything storebought, at about 80c a loaf. Hard to beat

Welcome!  That bread recipe looks great.  Brewin' all grain for the last 15 years?!  I just did my first (collaborative) all grain brew with a few members of the local Maltose Falcons brewing society earlier this month on the shop's 30 gal system.  Have about six extract + steeped grain batches under my belt as well, but have yet to invest in an all grain system of my own.  I did, however, invest in putting together a kegerator.

I'm totally droolin' over thoughts of that sourdough coming outta your dutch oven... What else comes out of there?

Hey Geo-

You are quite fortunate to have the Maltose Falcons as your local brewing club. I believe they are the oldest homebrew club in the nation (1976?) and have had more national award winners than any other club.. A lof of history and know how with those guys.  Sweet kegerator! They sure do make things nice.. I bottled for years until I built my 4 tap kegerator two years ago.. I've never looked back and I you won't either!

As for the Dutch Ove, I got into that about 10 years ago when my sister in law bought me a little dutch oven.. I know have 10 in all different shapes and sizes and I make everything from cobblers to lasagna and enter competitions all over Pacific Northwest.. It's a lot of fun and you can always eat your mistakes.. I really love taking it camping and when all the other campers are eating canned shili and hotdogs for dinner, we are having souffle and fresh camp rolls and cobbler.. Get a lot of curious, hungry looking onlookers.. heheh

If you have any inkling to bake, you have got to try that recipe I posted.. You will amaze yourself and your friends with how good this bread is.. Good luck in your future brewing endeavors!

:whoa:, 10 dutch ovens, you are serious!  Would love to see you posting more of your recipes here on the board (with pic's!). :yesnod:
For car camping, that type thing would be glorious - but for backpacking, a wee heavy I'd imagine!

On the Falcons, it's a tremendous club full of some very knowledgeable brewers no doubt.  Just this past weekend, we were up in San Francisco at Anchor Brewing Company, as their guest for winning their Homebrew Club of the Year award (several times over at that).  They let us roam about their brewery floor and swill off of their in house taps to our heart's content for six hours strong.  They even cooked us a BBQ lunch complete with tri-tip, chicken, cheesy potatoes, corn on the cob and salad.  Really cool folks up there!

haha this is awesome.  I love little living critters.  Yeast is probably the most amazing thing in the world.  If I was a lot smarter and had time I would write the world history of yeast.

I do come with a practical question though.  Is there a reason for the difference in sanitation techniques in the brew world and the grow world?  Or is this just a matter of tradition.  Would star san work as a sanitizer for mushroom growing purposes.  or is this whole alcohol thing necessary?

Good question.. I thought the same thing.. I took some of disposable plastic petri dishes that were used.. Then I proceeded like I would for brewing beer: Washed with hot soapy water and soaked in iodophor.. Poured the plates and three days later every plate was contaminated.. So, My take was that a scrub in sanitizer was not effective enough for mycology purposes.. Sanitation is way more tight in the mycology world..

wow! Fantastic trip! I am so jealous!  My wife and I are going to the National Homebrewing Conference in San Diego this year and I am looking forward to touring lots of breweries during that week! Looked like you  had a great time!  As for dutch ovens and backpacking, they make super-light aluminum dutch  ovens do that work really well...  Take care
