East St. Louis man convicted in unusual drug case

An East St. Louis man was convicted on Tuesday in an unusual drug case where a 30-year-old man died of a drug overdose despite a revival attempt with frozen meat.

Jonathan "J.J." Ward, of Effingham, bought heroin from Tavis D. Doyle on May 28, 2009 and died of an overdose a day later inside Doyle's crack house on Walter Street in East St. Louis, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said Ward collapsed inside the house and Doyle refused to allow witnesses to call for help. Instead, prosecutors said, Doyle tried to revive Ward by placing frozen meat in Ward's pants. Then, Doyle insisted Ward was still alive and "just needed to sleep it off."

Witnesses eventually transported Ward to Barnes Jewish Hospital about 12 hours after his collapse.

Doyle, 42, was convicted in U.S. District Court in East St. Louis on three counts of distribution of heroin resulting in death, maintaining premises for distribution of controlled substances, and distribution of crack cocaine to a person under the age of 21.

Dozens of witnesses testified that Doyle sold crack cocaine and heroin non-stop between 2008 and 2009. Several East St. Louis prostitutes testified that Doyle encouraged them to bring their prostitution clients to his house to buy drugs.

Doyle faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole. His sentencing is set for June.

Doyle was acquitted on a charged related to the overdose of a 27-year-old Glen Carbon woman.

"The United States Attorney's Office is putting drug dealers on notice. You will be held responsible criminally for any deaths or serious injuries which you cause through the sale of drugs, even if you do not intend to kill or hurt someone," said Stephen R. Wigginton, the U.S. Attorney.

Yeah, fuck CPR, I would much rather have frozen meat in my pants.

This guy kinda sounds like he got what he deserved. He could have at least
had the guy transported to the hospital as soon as he collapsed.

If drugs were legal the guy would have no problem calling for help and this
man probably wouldn't be dead.

POS.

I think he deserves what he got. Seems like an all around piece of shit.

My friend was at a party with underage drinkers, including the people that lived there. They fed this under-18 girl shots until she projectile vomited and passed out. No one would take her to the hospital until hours later because the people that lived there were under 21 and did not want the cops to show up. Someone dropped her at the hospital hours later, and she ended up with severe brain damage. They went after the adult that bought the alcohol with several charges including involuntary manslaughter, even though that guy did not have anything to do with the party.

Irresponsible behavior gets people in trouble. Do not give stuff to people who cannot handle their shit.

So when are they rounding up the "doctors" and pharmaceutical sales reps and execs?

People in this thread are ignoring the consequences of delivering a friend to the hospital.  You can catch a murder charge in some states for being with a person who ODs while they OD.

This is the result of prohibition, not "some stupid crackhead".  He knows more about the game than you apparently do.

They could've dropped him in front of the hospital and ran before anyone could see them. Jesus Christ, even a supermarket. Anywhere that someone else could see that he needed help. I don't give a flying fuck what the consequences may be -- if someone may not die if I can get them to help, I'd be damned not to try.

Also, he sold him the heroin and then let him do it in his home. If you don't want responsibility, don't let idiots shoot up in your house.

My thoughts exactly.  Let's add alcohol manufacturers and distributors to that list as well.
