Nothing

i recently had a conversation with a fellow on omegle on death. i saved it, sent it to a friend, deleted it, and am presently trying to track it down again thru said friend. anyhoo, he had a very logical view on life and i was genuinely surprised at how much it all made sense to me. the only problem is that i can't comprehend "nothing". it was his thinking, as is the same for many many others, that when we die nothing happens. we simply shut off. no heaven, no hell, no reincarnation, no eternal bliss. just OFF. i don't understand "nothing". i can't imagine "nothing". i wouldn't even know where to begin with "nothing". i'm not necessarily looking for answers, i'm mostly just tired, bored, and questioning existence. thoughts? if i find the conversation i'll post it, whether anyone's interested or not.

I can imagine nothing. What was it like before you born? Nothing. Nothingness makes a lot of sense to me, because all nothing is, is the lack of something.
The only reason it's hard to understand is because for our entire lives, there is something. There's always something, so we assume there will always be something. WE will cease, everything else will exist.

Yeah it kind of pisses me off. It's logical that when your nervous system no longer has activity, the system can't continue and you can no longer think or retain memory.
But we also know that time seems to pass by instantly when we aren't conscious. So when we die, logically we can conclude that we either experience nothing and the universe simply goes on, or time is infinite and we eventually become conscious again when our nervous system occurs again in some form.
It would be kind of like we respawn in a different scenario that happened to bring us about.

but the reason you know you dont remember anything is that you woke up, right? what would it be like to not wake up? i can't comprehend it

that makes some sense. however, you still know about that "nothing" because you achieved consciousness after birth. what would it be like to not know about that "nothing", but instead experience(or not experience) it? i still can't wrap my head around it. again, probly no answer for this, just rambling

Nothing is something.
Its like deadspace, the absence of something which is nothing.
I just say fuck all the existentialism thought. I'll find out when Im dead. Enjoy everything now. Life is hedonism, seek pleasure with the least amount of pain possible. Do this and jizz your whole life. Then die happy wishing you could have a little more pleasure

good points, but time can also work in the opposite fashion. you can sit on your couch after consuming some good shrooms and live multiple lifetimes, then snap out of it and realize it's been an hour and your dog needs to go out. time in our heads can be just as real as time in the "real world". so, i would have to be more inclined to believe that time is infinte, but we aren't able to experience all of it

Nothingness is not to be experienced. Nothingness comes about at the end of our experience. It would be like falling asleep and never waking up, but never knowing you went to sleep. There will be no "you" to interpret your death. Just...nothing. It's pretty easy for me to wrap my head around...what about nothingness can't you understand?

can you really imagine "nothing"? i think its a bit different than simply sleeping. when we fall asleep or pass out there's still brain activity, dreams, etc. plus, we know we became unconscious because we convieniently wake up later and think "wow i dont remember anything that happened during the last 8 hours. i must have been sleeping". that doesnt happen with death(least i dont think it does).

Haha you aren't special, and "YOU" don't want to experience nothing because you're too attached to your ego to be at peace with the fact that someday all you will be is a memory. One huge dose of mushrooms made me completely at peace with death. I used to get some anxiety thinking about dying, and not existing, but now I am actually sort of looking forward to that day. When I can rest... AND WHO KNOWS maybe I'm wrong and it'll be like a huge DMT trip, or there will be heaven or I'll burn in hell, or I'll come back as another being, as a tree or a monkey or some shit. I'm happy with accepting nothingness. I don't want to exist forever.

Actually the reason this pisses me off is because I dont want to be conscious forever.
Conscious life in various forms always seems to be struggling one way or another. Sure it's not bad now, but think about all the beings that had to exist before we could make life as worry free as it is now. Even so, we just made it worry free for ourselves. Many humans and animals are still suffering today.

Well you cant even possibly know the answer. I personally believe after death is truth. All you ever wanted to know will be answered. The answer to life the universe and everything. With the answer someone transcends their own conscience-ness to a place above something, nothing, matter, existence.
I think you can still enjoy the ride and be fairly egotistical while understanding death is at the end of the road and theres nothing you can do to stop it. Anyway life is just a memory forgotten.
Personally I dont know how you can fear death. It would suck having to live forever. Forever thinking, my mind is always clicking someday I'd like to to end. Im glad that it will, but im also optimistic about what might happen. I think in the end everything will be worth it, so more power to ya death. As they say. Death is only the beginning. What begins must also end.

that'd be nice
Moo456, yes life is suffering, but sometimes its pretty damn good. also, life means consciousness, which means we can, at the very least, hope for an end to said suffering. our consciousness is one hell of a gift, one that i never wish to give up

If I had to live forever I'd be k with that just cause I realized awhile back to just let go, nothing is worth taking serious anymore especially the consequences of death.

Sure you think that as things are. Maybe some sex slave that gets raped and beaten every day would disagree. For them the hope for the suffering to end won't make it end any faster.
I'd rather have a universe that had no life than one that had a living hell for many and bliss for others. That's just me though.

Exactly! Why would I WANT that? Idk...I guess nothing is easier for me to grasp than infinity. Seriously, FOREVER?! No thank you. I don't NEED to exist forever. Why? What's the point?
Just like you say, there will be no "you". "You" will have no idea you've even died. That will be peace IMO

i realize that i suffer less than a large portion of the population. even so, when faced with a choice between a consciousness no matter how shitty and nothing, i'm pretty sure i'd choose the former. however, i may have a biased opinion, being that i've never been a sex slave and all.
as i said before, our consciousness is a precious gift. we can think, we can react, we can do more shit inside and outside our heads than is logically necessary and it fucking rocks. who would want to give that up?
