Mini-fridge for storing cultures on agar.
    #14015723 - 02/23/11 07:01 PM (13 years, 9 days ago)

I'd like to start out by saying that I enjoy mycology strictly as a hobby, and have no desire to produce for profit (illegal or otherwise) so I don't need and amazing/expensive professional setup.

I've been toying with the idea of strain isolation/cloning, and I was wondering if cultures in a dish would keep for a while if stored in one of those 6-can mini fridges they sell. Also is there any way to store a master culture semi-permanently?

I tried the search function, but after 2 search terms and 6 total pages of browsing, no luck, so I figured I'd just ask.

Thanks in advance.  :bow2:

You want a fairly stable temperature for long term storage or the slants will develop condensation inside, ruining the cultures.

I have a $199 Sears mini-fridge and it works OK, but oscillates by a few degrees, so I keep the cultures in insulated lunch boxes, which are then placed in the fridge.  The insulated lunch boxes keep the slants at a stable temperature.

RR, what temperature do you set the fridge to?  And aside from Volvariella species, are there any specific species that you exclude from storage in this manner?

I thought I replied to this earlier, but I see my post isn't here.  I keep the cultures just above freezing, 1C to 2C.
