Here's a thought 1

If you have free will, can you stop your thoughts for a day? If not, why? Are you not willing your thoughts? If not, then who is? Who or where are your thoughts coming from?
Catchy title...

What is that moment when, upon attempting to silence the mind, it quiets temporarily?

When you give up the trying?
Ego death seems to be the defense mechanism of a horrible trip. The lucky ones get it over with early in life while the rest of us claw our way through.

I tend to think there are natural lulls throughout the day. Where if everything that needs to be said is allowed to be said, a silence can fall. The message has been sent and received, nothing more to do...
But there is also that period of time where communication is being attempted but you can still suppress it for a while and find an artificially created silence. That's the one I'm going about.

it's our defense mechanisms that turn the experience of ego loss into a horrible trip.

Well I can get to a point where I only have one thought in meditation, I can feel humanity peel away from me when I meditate, but thats only because through Ayahuasca I learned what it is to be bodyless, selfless, painless, pointless. I was everything and everything was me, but its always that way. One thing that constantly boggles me is that if the world i visit on those experiences is so amazing and so beautiful, pretty much just right, then why don't i just stay there... I experienced the dying portion of Ayahuasca and it didn't seem to scare me much, it was nice.

I seem to be in perfect control of my body excepting internal organs obviously, but the rest of what my brain is doing appears to be bubbling with life for the sake of it just like the rest of nature. So there's obviously some free will.
Perhaps it's the elusivity of what "will" is that makes free will such an elusive question.

This would be a very uninteresting day. I don't think it would be my will to be thoughtless.
If it was, I don't think it would be out of the realm of possibilities of achieving with some practice.
I can feel my mind wanting to think when I supress it. I can supress thoughts for a time, but lose interest fairly quickly :P
If you have free will, can you be a pro baseball player?

Don't think 'with' or 'of' thoughts. imagine them into existence.
Try also not to use words, try to imagine, its far more effective in controlling the mind.

How do you mean, imagine them into existence?
Certainly we shouldn't talk too much, unless it's a very pressing problem and we think it would help. I used to think this way all the time when I was "on the hunt for the answers to the universe." Hehe, you hate it, but it's great being an adolescent. Anyway, we should keep it all subvocal. Life is far more enjoyable with a minimum of thought.

imagine thoughts, don't think them. Thinking or 'knowing' is really just observing. To control the mind you must take control of the imagination process already taking place.

So you sort of pretend to think? Like, hmm... I can sort of see that. It's a bit of a mystery (a bit!) how we're thinking in the first place. Are we perhaps imagining it all anyway?

Yeah tats why you need to pretend/imagine but mostly imagine if you can.
Imagination is always taking place in you mind, it is what causes your perceptions. Imagination is an outline of what we think is real. Whether or not something is useful to imagine, depends on its validity phenomena in our experiences and how they relate to our pleasures/pains.

It all depends on your definition.
To me thinking is identifying pre-existing thoughts that you may or may not have. It's accessing your memory.
Imagination is making up new memories, through the attachment of one or more beliefs a pre-existing memory.

Catchy title indeed.
Perhaps that part of me which is not conscious is determining my next thought.

thanks for the video. I really haven't watched much Mckenna but I always like the way we can tie the unconscious into things. Be it events like the video showed, or fairy tales and myths like Jung and Campbell.
