Wow really? Why would they do that... I can't imagine why something you set your contacts in for hours at a time, and then place directly in your eyeball, would be abrasive.

I don't have contacts but a lot of my friends have and my girlfriend does and I've used their contact solutions hundreds of times and it works as good as/better than visine.

Well there are different kinds of solutions. There are 5 minute wash solutions that contain a little bit of peroxide and a preservative that keeps the solution sterile. Thing is that if you soak your lenses in it overnight, the preservative will get sucked into the contacts due to them being highly permeable. Essentially the contacts will concentrate the preservative in them and when you put them in your eyes it will burn the shit out of your corneas, my girlfriend found that one out the hard way. It'll also end up burning you eye if you're putting it directly in your eyes a few times a day, it's made for only quick washes to remove protein deposits from lenses.

Another type is the overnight soak stuff, it has a much higher concentration of peroxide. After about 6 hours of reacting with the proteins and whatnot on lenses, the peroxide turns to water and it won't hurt you... But if you put that shit directly in your eyes you will INSTANTLY know you made a mistake because if burns like a motherfucker. High concentrations of peroxide burns off the corneal epithelium and that ain't a good thing.

Yet another type is just sterile saline that you use to wash dust and whatnot off of contacts, that stuff is safe to put in your eyes.

More or less, if it says it's a sterilizing solution or a wash solution, definitely read the directions before you think about putting it directly in your eyes.

My grandpa once woke up with eye crusties...

He was dead the next day of cancer...
