I've just added it to pasturized wood chips/wood pellets...my PC is a small one...I suppose I should have added the bran before pasturization of the sub????

As I understand it when supplementing with wheat bran or any kind of bran for that matter you need to sterilize to avoid contaminates.
That is what GGMM says at least.

Correct. If you use wheat, rice, oat, etc., bran you must add it first and sterilize, not pasteurize. RR

yes, but I pasteurize my substrate with 5% wheat bran and add high ratio of spawn and it seems work too, probably lucky I don“t know

I've seen wheat and rice bran go rancid after only 18 to 24 hours. When used, it should be kept sterile until full colonization. RR

sorry a clarification: 5% total dry weight substrate is wheat bran, it is really little. Maybe that's why.

Since your here RR, got a quick question in regards to wheat bran supplementing.
I know you have said that making your sawdust substrate to nutritious can lead to malformed pins, and other problems especially when dealing with Shiitake 75. What do you find is the correct ratio to use so your substrate is not overly nutritious.
I think I remember in GGMM it says supplement upto 22%, but it was not in regards to shiitake.

You can supplement with up to 20% alfalfa like buckeye oysters does here:

RR what is the current ratio of Bran/sawdust/gypsum you are currently using? I will be using the shiitake 75 strain, and course oak sawdust without wood chips. Also, the wheat bran I got is a soft wheat bran. Is there a difference?
