Rare Acid Test Posters Flying High February 20, 2011 - collectorsweekly.com
Of all the rock posters from the 1960s, few command as much attention as those created for the legendary acid tests in 1965 and 1966. Organized by author Ken Kesey and featuring music by the Grateful Dead, these events took place in the San Francisco Bay Area and Southern California, and were popularized by Tom Wolfe in his 1968 book “The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.”

Seen here are two rare posters that were auctioned this past weekend. The image on the left was designed by Wes Wilson, who created posters for the Beatles’ last concert at Candlestick Park, as well as shows at Bill Graham’s Fillmore Auditorium. It was probably used for numerous events, with the location hand-written below the question mark. This copy has been signed by both Kesey and Wilson. The poster on the right was designed by a guy named GUT, and advertises the last test, which was held at Winterland on Halloween in 1966. Even though the Grateful Dead is listed on the poster, the band was actually playing at California Hall that night, along with Quicksilver Messenger Service and Mimi Farina.
The final prices were $18,191.25 (including the buyer’s fee) for the graduation’ poster, and $17,325 (ditto) for the signed piece.

That's awesome I'd love to be able to collect pieces of history like that. I've never read The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test but it's been on my need to read list, I think I'll head over to the Barnes and Noble later today

There's a whole site that LearyFan hipped me to called Postertrip.com that has a part called the Acid Test chronicles that shows a lot of the posters with their history and some info on the events. Very cool stuff!

I can't imagine dropping that amount of money on posters, regardless of how awesome they may be.

Saw some awesome Grateful Dead posters during my last trip through San Francisco. One poster even stated "all night rave".

I hope that someone can duplicate these or get a copyright. I kind of want to buy one.

Are you serious? This is some real holy grail type shit. These material articles were involved in very real magic.
Not to mention the historical and cultural significance. In 20-50 years they'll be worth far more than 20k.

Don't get me wrong -- I respect and appreciate the movement and most of everything that went with it. I would be ecstatic if I owned either. Spending 18K on just about anything is just absurd to me. Perhaps my opinion would be different if there were a few more zeros in my back account, haha.

This reminds me of the time in 2004, when a promo 7" of the Merry Pranksters' Sound City Acid Test record went for a staggering $2,370.99. Goobler bidded on it up to $600 and got out. But do you know who won it? Postertrip! I didn't know of him then. Not sure his site even existed. But this thread made me look back on it and I noticed the name. Click here.
PS - I didn't know you posted this, Veggie. I didn't think you would, so I made a double post in The Pub.
