Internet problems in my apartment
    #14009905 - 02/22/11 08:48 PM (13 years, 10 days ago)

Hey I was looking for some help with my internet that I have in my apartment. Ive been having problems with it since I have moved in and its really starting to get annoying. So the problems that I have is that the internet will constantly drop my connection. I always have full bar strength but I still get dropped. I called one day to see whats up and found out that I am connecting to a wireless router that is in the apartment below me. I also found that the whole building that I live in is running off of one business class router. I was wondering if it could be the problem with too many people on one modem or if it could be a problem with my wireless adapter or computer. Please help!

First, do you have your own internet service provider that you pay each month for your own service?  So you have your own modem and router?

If so it could be that both routers are on the same channel and your neighbors router is unsecured.  A lot of wireless cards have utilities that show other access points, signal strength, and the channel they're on so you can pick a channel different from those interfering.

Keep in mind that channels effectively overlap. Hence, only if there are at least 5 channels between two networks, they're effectively separated. Otherwise they'll interfere to some extent. So if your network is on channel 11, and you neighbor's on 6 or lower, that's ok. If you're on 11 and your neighbor is on 10, you can expect the networks to keep interfering. This phenomenon makes it next to impossible to get good wlan performance in my apartment building, as there are about 20 different networks within reach of each other, all sharing the same 14 channels.

I use to get dropped when I tried a Trendnet router, but now with a Cisco G router I don't have that problem.  Cisco is way more reliable.  You didn't provide enough info to answer your question.  Are you paying for service or taking advantage of WI-FI connections?  If you're running off of a router in another apartment, then your slowing their network down at their cost.  A business router is sweet, but hopefully the landlord has a business connection, like T1 or fiber optics.  You need to start trouble-shooting and saying "what should I try next?"  Like, did you try connecting the computer to the router with a network cable?  Probably the best connection anyway.  Will you still get dropped?  If so, is it a shitty router?  Don't rely on cheap computer hardware.  Did you have this problem previously?  Could be that new hardware you recently installed on your computer and is now conflicting with other devices, causing the internet drop.  Can you reconnect after unplugging/replugging network cable or switching cable into another router port.  The other end of cable will stay connected to your computer.  rate me please!:syringe::mushroom2:

The only thing you could do besides getting your own connection, is crack into the router and take it over.

If your in an apartment some wardriver probably already has it, and/or is deauthing people. Or the owner is kicking you off.
